Artists, Virtual Visits, and Tours
Art connoisseurs have always had much to appreciate at SAS. Art history classes, museum exhibit previews, and art tours have been mainstays of our program for years. New one-of-a-kind online and in-person options put the spring in your step this semester.
Our catalog is replete with courses offering case studies on particular artists, showcasing styles from antiquity to the present. With over two dozen art appreciation classes already underway, the next few months still have plenty in store. Coming up this Monday, April 18, 2022, Jeffrey Mishur unveils Winslow Homer's Great Themes (11152), an illustrated examination of Homer's exceptional oil and watercolor paintings of Civil War subjects and the sea. The following week, Mishur ventures to France to consider Mary Cassatt, An American Impressionist in Paris (11153) on Monday, April 25, 2022.
Jumping forward into the twentieth century, Mishur then scrutinizes the Art of Georgia O’Keeffe (11154) on Monday, May 2, 2022 and Andrew Wyeth's People and Places (11157) on Monday, May 23, 2022.

The interplay between Black history and art comes into focus with four unique classes in late April and May. Riva Blumenfeld leads off with Quilting Stories (11053) on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, when she will examine the themes of gender and racial inequality in the quilts of five contemporary artists. For a second take on quilting, Blumenfeld pays a virtual visit to the must-see retrospective of the season, Faith Ringgold: American People at the New Museum (11054) on Tuesday, May 10, 2022. The class provides an opportunity to make the most of a planned museum visit or covers the highlights for those who are not able to get there before the exhibition closes in early June.
Dive deeper into folk-inspired artwork on Monday, May 9, 2022, as Mishur looks at the Life and Art of Horace Pippin (11155), a self-taught artist and veteran of World War I whose artwork was often inspired from his personal experiences in the war. His paintings depict contemporary African Americans and portray periods relevant to Black history. Mishur then turns his attention to Aaron Douglas, Harlem Renaissance Meets Art Deco (11156) on Monday, May 16, 2022, when students may appreciate Douglas's murals at the Harlem branch of the New York Public Library without making the trip into the city.
Using their unfinished artwork as a springboard for discussion, Page Knox has been examining major painters and sculptors from the Renaissance up to the modern/contemporary era in this popular series, Artists of the Non Finito, introduced at SAS last fall. Knox covers a different artist and examines one or two unfinished pieces along with other works produced throughout the artist's life and career. Still to come in the next few months:

Spring temperatures offer the opportunity for outdoor adventures into the city and beyond with our upcoming Walking Tours. Ronnit Vasserman, who just led students through the hippest art galleries of the Lower East Side, is plotting her next stops through Williamsburg and Bushwick for Greenpoint Art Excursion, North Brooklyn Renaissance (11085) on Thursday, April 28, 2022. After that, on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, she explores the treasures at the historic landmark Green-Wood Cemetery (11086), the burial ground of Jean-Michel Basquiat, among other famous artists. Venture farther south with Vasserman to Mana Contemporary Art Hub (11087) in New Jersey on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, for a series of studio visits, a silkscreening demonstration, and lunch within a former tobacco warehouse turned art exhibition compound.

Riva Blumenfeld also has big plans for one virtual visit and three unique trips to the hottest galleries of Tribeca, Chelsea, and/or the Upper East Side. Each tour is carefully curated to highlight the best of what is currently on display in neighborhood venues. The constantly rotating exhibits make each tour a unique experience. Armchair Tour: Contemporary Galleries of New York City (11055), her next virtual tour, will be on Tuesday, June 7, 2022. Her next two in-person trips to the Contemporary Galleries of New York City are planned for Tuesday, May 3, 2022 (11057), and Tuesday, June 14, 2022 (11058).
