Kettering Can't Get Enough Robotics
Hundreds of robotics students took the field at Kettering University as part of the VEX Robotics Competition (VRC) State Championship and FIRST Robotics District Events.
The events kicked off Feb. 27 in the Connie and Jim John Recreation Center with the VEX State Championship. The University has hosted various VEX competitions on campus for the past seven years, but this will be the first time it has hosted a state championship.
Almost 80 teams participated in the competition, named Tipping Point. Teams used their robots to move rings to their respective goals as well as move neutral goals to their respective areas within a specific time period. Each round consisted of a 15-second autonomous period followed by a 1-minute, 45-second driver-controlled period. The team with the most points at the end of the round was the winner.
Seventy-three FIRST Robotics teams competed March 3-5 and March 10-12 for district events. The teams had six weeks to design, build and prepare their industrial-sized robots to compete in the 2022 FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Game, RAPID REACT. RAPID REACT is part of the 2022 season, FIRST FORWARD, which is inspired by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal No. 9 to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation. To that end, FIRST FORWARD calls for students to overcome transportation challenges with forward-thinking technological innovations.
In RAPID REACT, robots started on their respective tarmacs with preloaded cargo, then delivered the loads to specific points and collected additional cargo. The robots received assistance from players at the terminal and earned points for reaching various hanger rungs before the match concluded.

How to Reduce Your Taxes Next April With a Gift to Kettering
Your gift to Kettering University will support students through scholarships, upgrades to classrooms and labs, and more. Why not let it maximize your tax savings?
Alumni E. Roland Maki '60 and Don Chaffin '61 are among the donors who are maximizing their tax savings by using their individual retirement accounts (IRA) to support the University.
“I recently donated to Kettering University by designating part of my IRA Required Minimum Distribution as a Qualified Charitable Distribution," Maki said. "This maximizes the benefit of my donation because 100% of every dollar up to $100,000 benefits Kettering students — and it lowers my adjusted gross income, reducing my income taxes.”
Chaffin took a different approach by naming Kettering as a beneficiary to his IRA.
"As I approach my 83rd birthday, my wife Barbara and I decided to set up bequests to our favorite organizations — all that was required was adding the names of the organizations as beneficiaries of the IRA along with the percent of its value at the time of my death that each will receive," Chaffin said. "No need to change our existing wills and trust documents! Our family members won’t be taxed as beneficiaries, and we help Kettering University.”
Kettering University is prepared to help you make a current and/or planned gift from your IRA to support the University. To facilitate the process, University Advancement can provide you with a “Plan for the Provider” letter to expedite the process.
