Planting Kincaid’s lupine to help rare butterflies
|
Recently, intrepid volunteers, landowners and staff from IAE and partner agencies, planted over 6000 plugs of Kincaid’s lupine (Lupinus oreganus) at four restoration sites near Corvallis, Oregon.
Kincaid’s lupine is a threatened plant species, found primarily in the prairies of the Willamette Valley, Oregon, that has become rare due to the loss and degradation of prairie habitat. Kincaid’s lupine is the primary host plant for the endangered Fender’s blue butterfly (Icaricia icarioides fenderi). Read More

Announcements & Brief Updates

Thanks to funding from the Santa Fe National Forest, IAE Southwest Office will be initiating a rare plant inventory and germplasm collection for Arizona willow (Salix arizonica) in the Santa Fe and Carson Forests this summer. Arizona willow, a Forest Service Sensitive species, is threatened by livestock and wildlife browsing, hydrological changes, ski resorts, and rust (pathogenic fungi). An IAE botany team will relocate and assess conditions of existing populations where they grow in the subalpine zone (10,000-11,200 feet) and carefully collect cuttings for long term preservation in the National Plant Germplasm System.

IAE staff recently had a planting day at the Native Plant Farm! We transferred greenhouse-propagated seedlings to the great outdoors to grow and create more seeds and plants for future restoration projects. Baby Willamette daisy (Erigeron decumbens), an endangered prairie species, made its debut at our plots at the Oregon State University Vegetable Farm to produce seed for future restoration and recovery efforts. Grow well, young seedlings!
