Welcome
Anthony Nicholas, Project Coordinator
Genesee County Prevention Coalition

My name is Anthony Nicholas, and I am the new Project Coordinator for the Genesee County Prevention Coalition. I received my MPH from Purdue University, and my bachelors in Exercise Science from Wayne State University.

I have acquired over ten years of health promotion experience, primarily in the field of health and wellness, as well as clinical applications. I am passionate about influencing change and providing resources and opportunities to those who are in need to help influence a healthier tomorrow.

I am excited for expanding my experience and credentials into the substance abuse realm, as well as continuing my insatiable desire to learn as much as I can about Public Health. I absolutely love what I do for my community and look forward to the upcoming challenges that await!

Senate Bills 597 & 598

For the past 50 years, the mental health system in Michigan has been run and operated by county-based government entities to serve Michiganders with complex mental health, emotional disturbance, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and substance use disorders. Senate Bills 597 & 598 hand these services to for-profit health plans not even based in our state.

Senate Bills 597 & 598 are not right for Michiganders. Solutions must get at the root cause and address the areas of greatest need. This includes increasing overall access to care, adding more local providers, strengthening the workforce, and increasing inpatient care opportunities.

We must broaden the conversation beyond Medicaid. Mental illness and addiction impact millions of individuals and families across the state of Michigan regardless of their insurance.

Don’t let Senator Shirkey play games with our mental health. Sign the petition against Shirkey’s money grab for insurance companies.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month

Alcohol Awareness Month is a national public health awareness campaign sponsored by the National Council for Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD). It takes place every April. Alcohol Awareness Month was developed in order to increase awareness and understanding of the causes and treatment of one of our nation’s top public health problems: alcoholism. Established in 1987, alcohol awareness month allows communities to focus on spreading awareness and reducing the stigma associated with alcohol addiction. Observance of this awareness campaign also highlights the need for education on the dangers of unsafe alcohol consumptions.
Would you like to get involved with Underage Drinking Awareness work at the Genesee County Prevention Coalition? Join the next GCPC Underage Drinking Workgroup meeting on May 3rd at 9:00am as they plan and implement awareness campaigns for our local communities.
The Comprehensive Youth Vaping and Tobacco Quitline
Program of National Jewish Health

As the nation’s leading respiratory hospital and largest non-profit tobacco quit line provider, National Jewish Health launched a comprehensive vaping and tobacco cessation program for teens under age 18 who want to stop using tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes.

The My Life, My Quit™ program combines best practices using real-time talk, texting and online chat for youth to reach a Tobacco Cessation Coach. The information on mylifemyquit.com and in the program materials for My Life, My Quit™ are designed for teens and were created through discussions with teens and with subject matter experts and community stakeholders.

GCPC has a supply of the My Life, My Quit™ flyers (8.5 x 11) and posters (11 x 17) for schools, pediatricians or youth serving organizations in Genesee County. If you would like to place an order, please contact Andrea Keller at AKeller@theGCPC.org.
