Understanding Houston
Discussion on Higher Education Attainability

On Wednesday, March 30, 2022, we hosted a discussion on challenges and approaches to supporting college access and success for low-income students. Thank you to representatives from BridgeYear, Understanding HoustonUniversity of Houston-Downtown, and OneGoal Houston, who all shared data, unique perspectives, and experiences about higher-education access and success for low-income students in Houston and beyond. There was impactful and engaging dialogue surrounding opening doors for more of Houston's youth, creating a future workforce that mirrors Houston's vibrant, talented, and diverse population.
Family Volunteer Day

In honor of Family Volunteer Day, a national day of service on April 10, Generation SERVE hosted families for a round-robin of curated nonprofit volunteer activities while learning more about volunteerism and community needs. Participants completed hands-on service projects supporting 25+ local nonprofits across Houston. Greater Houston Community Foundation is proud to be a sponsor of this inaugural event!
Next Gen Site Visits

The Next Gen Donor Institute is a year-long program to help Houston's next generation of philanthropic leaders develop a deeper understanding of their philanthropic journey and identity. As part of their coursework, each class goes on a series of site visits, or tours of nonprofits, around the Houston area. Thank you to HARC, Casa de Esperanza, Eight Million Stories, and LISC Houston for lending your time, and sharing more about the impact your organizations make in our Houston community. Follow us on social media to learn more about key takeaways from each site visited.
International Children's Book Day

"If you help a person to read, then their opportunities in life will be endless" - Former First Lady, Barbara Bush

Saturday, April 2, 2022, was International Children's Book Day, reminding us of how proud we are to support and partner with the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation to help make literacy accessible for so many members of our Houston community and beyond.
The Bryan Stoltenberg Memorial Scholarship

We all begin our philanthropic journey in different ways and for various reasons. Native Houstonian Mike Dilick and his wife Tricia wanted to establish a scholarship fund to remember their close friend, Bryan Stoltenberg, who tragically passed away in 2013. Bryan grew up in Sugar Land, was an All-American at Colorado University, and later played in the NFL. Bryan left behind his wife Laura and his three sons.

In 2021, the scholarship awarded $40,000 to 11 students. "I would have never known how to start this," said Mike. "My attorney recommended Greater Houston Community Foundation. After a few phone calls and some coordination by their team, we were able to get started very quickly."
Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis

Our thoughts continue to be with Ukraine and those impacted near and far. Please consider donating to one of the many nonprofit organizations providing emergency aid during this difficult time.
