April 2022 | Volume 14 Issue 4
Happy Spring!

I had a few robins perched on my back deck this morning, which was exciting to see after a very long winter! I recently discovered The Warblers podcast by Birds Canada. It has a number of episodes that apply to me directly as I'll be working on making my yard bird friendly this year, such as episodes on gardening for birds and how to properly feed birds which I found very interesting! And it was a nice surprise to hear an interview with Janet Ng and her research on Ferruginous Hawks. And Episode 6: "Bneshiinyik" is amazing, as the speaker, Joseph Pitawanakwat, connects searching for indigenous medicine with Ojibwe language and birds, fascinating! If you like birds, be sure to check it out on your preferred podcast platform! I also listed a few opportunities to brush up on your bird ID skills below!

Brush up on your Bird ID Skills!
As migrating birds are beginning to return to the northern Prairies, you might want to freshen up your bird-watching skills or your song ID skills. There is a virtual event hosted by the Regina Public Library, Spring Birdwatching on the Prairies by Ryan Fisher of the Royal Saskatchewan Museum on May 11th at 7 PM. You can find out more and register here.

You might also want to consider downloading the Merlin Bird ID app. Answer three simple questions about a bird you are trying to identify and Merlin will give you a list of possible matches. Merlin's Sound ID listens to the birds around you and shows real-time suggestions for who’s singing, so a great way to refine your skills!

You can find The Warblers Podcast here.

Partner Spotlight
Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association
Submitted by Chad MacPherson, General Manager

The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association has a long history of advocating and promoting for the conservation and stewardship of Saskatchewan grasslands. Since 2016, we have actively been involved in the delivery of Species at Risk Partnerships on Agricultural Lands (SARPAL) programming in southwest Saskatchewan. We are currently entering the last year of our current SARPAL contract that has focused on the continuation of the grassbank project in Grasslands National Park and the further investigation of term conservation easements.

Our current research is primarily focused on producer acceptance and how to compensate producers for term conservation easement’s. We are hopeful that our evaluation methodology will be finalized in the next few months which will allow the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Foundation (SSGF) to enter into negotiations with landowners to sign term conservation easements in the next year.

On March 3rd we co-hosted a term conservation easement video release and panel discussion with SSGF on RealAgriculture to help address misinformation and raise awareness about term conservation easements.
