On Monday, April 4th, 2022, The Parenting Path hosted the Child Abuse Prevention Month: We Remember program in front of the Forsyth County Court House. During the program, they shared that in 2021, 28 children lost their lives due to child abuse in the state of North Carolina (1 of them being from Forsyth County). Community partners held balloons and let them rise as the name and a short descriptions of the victims were shared. About 4,200 cases of child abuse were reported last year. More than 1,600 of those cases were for children under the age of 5. Unfortunately, a child abuse case is reported every 10 seconds.

In solidarity with the awareness that the Parenting Path is creating, Smart Start of Forsyth County has a pinwheel garden in front of the building that can also be seen at other partnering organizations around Winston-Salem. Smart Start of Forsyth County is listed as a Child Abuse Prevention Agency on The Parenting PATH website. This list of agencies can be seen by clicking here!

Meet Deysi Reyes, the Bi-lingual Family Intake Specialist for SSFC. Deysi the Smart Start of Forsyth County team in March, and she’s been a great resource for our organization. As the Bi-lingual Family Intake Specialist, Deysi is responsible for assisting Spanish-speaking families by providing individualized consultations to parents of children ages birth to five years old depending on their needs. Deysi enjoys spending time with her husband and her three daughters, especially during their annual summer beach trip. She also enjoys baking, cooking, and trying new recipes. When wanting to refer a Spanish-speaking family to SSFC, Deysi is our go-to lady. Thanks for all you do, Deysi!

Book of the Month!

April's book of the month is One Earth, written by Eileen Spinelli. This book explores the beauty of the Earth while also teaching children how to love and care for it. One Earth is a great tool that can be used to spark a conversation about the roles even small children can have to improve our planet. Earth Day is April 22nd; check out One Earth today!
