Happy Earth Day

April 22, 2022

Summer, fall, winter, spring,

The seasons rotate as each brings

Its special beauty to this Earth of ours.

Winter’s snow and summer’s flowers;

Frozen rivers will flow come spring,

There is a renewal of everything.

#InvestInOurPlanet

THE BEST TIME TO PLANT A TREE WAS 20 YEARS AGO.

THE SECOND BEST TIME IS TODAY.

The theme for Earth Day 2022 is "INVEST IN OUR PLANET", focusing on the effects of climate change on the planet that we all share and what efforts are being made in the real world to mitigate it. In keeping with the theme, Earth Day 2022 will center on “accelerating solutions to combat our greatest threat, climate change, and to activate everyone — governments, citizens, and businesses — to do their part" announced the organization. Check out ways to help in the cause with ideas for your own personal projects for observing Earth Day 2022.

Trees enhance any landscape visually with their beauty, colors, and texture. However, their benefits are beyond aesthetics. Experts say trees should be considered a part of urban infrastructure. They are an important tool for cities to reduce urban heat island effects.

  • Trees absorb and store carbon dioxide.
  • In a process known as evapotranspiration, trees take up water from the ground and release it through the surface of their leaves, cooling the surrounding air.
  • Trees create shade for buildings. They reduce energy demand, which also reduces waste heat from air conditioners.
  • They block sunlight helping to keep the ground below cool.
  • They can help clean the air by taking in air pollutants.
  • By intercepting and absorbing rain, they reduce stormwater runoff.

TIME TO AERATE

Lawn aeration is an important process that keeps your yard healthy and free from thatch. Thatch is a mixture of decomposing grass, roots, and debris that builds up between the soil and the grass. Although a small amount of thatch is healthy for your yard, a large amount can damage grass and lead to weeds, pests, and diseases. Here are a few benefits of aerating your lawn:

  • Reduces thatch buildup which is harmful to your lawn
  • Reduces compacted soil
  • Helps oxygen, water and nutrients reach grassroots
  • Encourages lasting, healthy growth
  • Increases the effectiveness of fertilizer
  • Restores patchy or thin lawns when combined with overseeding
