A Message from our President/CEO:
|

Dear Friends of United Way,
This has been a very intense month for United Way and myself personally if I’m honest. I am so invested and passionate about our nonprofit partners and the community we serve. We had a hard hit earlier in the month when we learned of United Way Board member/Retired Police Chief, Mark Dalsing’s passing, which had rippling effects across our community. Mark was integral in leading United Way’s first fully competitive grant process two years ago. This month, we were back and it and I’m sure we have done him proud.
United Way staff and volunteers spent countless hours pouring over some very difficult funding decisions at the culmination of our second fully competitive grant process. Staff and the board are very proud of the work that was done by this group of Investment Review Panel volunteers and we know our work is better for it. We had rich discussions, weighed local priorities and geographic coverage, discussed grant scores, reviewed organizational finances, and of course looked at the program’s impact on local poverty. We have an incredible group of 34 programs that rose to the top and will receive United Way funding beginning June 1. I hope you read more about the programs below and in the months to come as we highlight some of our partnerships.
A good partnership means that both parties share in the benefits and that is exactly what United Way has with so many of our local nonprofits. We offer funding, technical assistance, and great PR to our nonprofits and in return, they provide collaboration, reciprocal support, and an investment in helping us reach our mission of strengthening our community.
Today, I’m asking you all to take a moment of gratitude for people in your lives that are true partners. I know I am!
Sincerely,
|

Danielle Peterson
President/CEO

United Way staff and Board of Directors extend our most heartfelt sympathy to Retired Chief Mark Dalsing’s family, friends, and to our community as a whole, as we begin to process the loss of an incredible community leader. Mark served on United Way’s Board of Directors since 2018, where he helped roll out United Way’s community impact investment process for nonprofits seeking funding. Mark is known for many things including his community involvement, the strength of his character, and his love of a good joke. All who knew him will miss this smirk. Sending our sympathies to his family, his Police Department brothers and sisters, the staff and tenants of Catholic Charities, and all the other nonprofits who are mourning the loss of a community-minded friend.

United Way Announces New Grant Award Recipients
|
|
United Way of Dubuque Area Tri-States (UWDATS) is proud to announce the allocation of $900,000 in grant awards to 34 local, nonprofit programs serving the tri-states and includes 6 newly funded partners. These grant awards are a result of United Way’s fully competitive community investment grant process wherein interested nonprofit programs had the opportunity to apply to receive funding that helps reduce or prevent poverty within United Way’s 10-county, tri-state coverage area. Last year this funding stream helped impact over 55,000 local lives.
A team of 24 community volunteers from various backgrounds and professional sectors came together to vet these organizations by reviewing and scoring program applications and ultimately made funding recommendations to the United Way Board of Directors.
"There are so many worthy nonprofits in our community doing great work. There were many difficult decisions that had to be made but we are proud of the impact and investment we were able to make in these worthy programs," stated one volunteer grant reviewer.
