Upcoming Architectural Walking Tours
Time to lace up your walking shoes and head out for our many upcoming in-person tours. Explore parks and public spaces, building styles, and neighborhoods of architectural significance while enjoying a breath of fresh air.
Municipal Parks and Public Spaces

Throughout the winter, Ginny Poleman kept our focus on Central Park with illustrated online lectures about its history and design. Join her in person as the park comes out of hibernation. This Thursday, April 28, 2022, she begins with Cleopatra’s Needle, Shakespeare, and Bears in Central Park (11165). She returns for more on Thursday, May 12, 2022, with Carousels, Taverns, and Strawberry Fields in Central Park’s West Side (11166). These two scenic tours are enjoyable as stand-alone excursions or as the culminating field trip to any of her previous companion online lectures.

While it holds the title as the most visited urban park, Central Park is not the only green destination in the city. Poleman leads us through several of New York City's other celebrated parks with an exploration of Madison Square Park, Gramercy Park, and Stuyvesant Square Park (11169) on Thursday, July 14, 2022.

The historical landmark of Green-Wood Cemetery (11086) is the focal point for Ronnit Vasserman's tour on Wednesday, May 4, 2022. Founded as one of the country's first rural cemeteries in 1838 (a full century before SAS), Brooklyn's Green-Wood serves as a cultural institution, an outdoor museum, and the final resting place for over 570,000 permanent residents. As stated succinctly by The New York Times in 1866, "It is the ambition of the New Yorker to live upon Fifth Avenue, to take his airings in the [Central] Park, and to sleep with his fathers in Green-Wood."
Beaux Arts and the Gilded Age

As popular culture has revived interest in Mrs. Astor, the captains of industry, and the socialites of the Gilded Age, SAS has kept pace with many lectures and classes focusing on that influential historic period. Indulge your fascination with the lifestyles of the robber barons and high society of the time by visiting the Beaux Arts landmarks and vestiges of the late 1800s development in New York City. Poleman's walking tours of Ladies' Mile, Shopping During the Gilded Age (11167) (Thursday, May 26, 2022) and Gilded Mansions of Museum Mile (11168) (Thursday, June 23, 2022), and John Hill's stroll up Iconic Fifth Avenue from Bryant Park to Central Park (11042) (Thursday, June 9, 2022) all bring a slice of history to life. Comfortable shoes are recommended but better to leave the corsets and top hats at home.
Art Deco

Fast forward from the late 1800s to the 1920s and 1930s to study the iconic architectural style at the heart of New York's reputation as a modern metropolis. Art deco evolved through a series of Manhattan skyscrapers into the city’s chief architectural language, and then spread across the city in every other building type. The Chrysler Building, the Waldorf-Astoria, and Rockefeller Center are among the hundreds of art deco monuments that survive as prized remnants of a distant yet modern past that still help define the city’s visual identity. Anthony Robins, historian and writer specializing in New York City architecture, is the ideal award-winning guide for a series of tours that highlight the abstract, stylized floral, geometric, and streamlined designs of Art Deco New York. Each tour requires separate registration but take them all for a comprehensive experience.

This tour highlights the super-tall residential towers and places their contemporary style into historical, political, and architectural context.
