We Are All Fractals

The community garden: a space for gathering, abundance and meaning. As many of us place our hands in the soil of our community gardens for the first time, we are called to reflect upon nature as a metaphor for well…everything. Specifically, I’m reminded of a concept illuminated by one of my favorite authors, adrienne maree brown, who writes about fractals. “Fractals are infinitely complex patterns that are …created by repeating a simple process over and over in an ongoing feedback loop.” We see fractals everywhere, from snowflakes and seeds to succulents and stars. And fractals exists where we cannot see them, too. Our patterns of being together, of growing and changing, can be viewed as infinite replications. In other words, “how we are at the small scale is how we are at the large scale. The patterns of the universe repeat at scale.”

We often dream of a world where the patterns established in cohousing are replicated in the communities and neighborhoods that surround them. Patterns like mutual support, intentional dialogue and conflict, ecological regeneration. We seek to nurture patterns that foster a cooperative society, and challenge those that keep us locked in competition, individualism and oppression.

April is National Volunteer Month

A more cooperative society starts with our communities, our committees, our neighbors. As a grassroots nonprofit, much of what we do is made possible by folks who graciously donate their time to advance cohousing. Members of our board, committees and initiatives create patterns of support and cooperation that are replicated at scale. As April is National Volunteer Month, I’d like to extend my deepest gratitude to all those who offer their time and labor towards the advancement of cohousing.

Inside Community Podcast

This month, we are also excited to announce our support of the Inside Community Podcast. CohoUS is a sponsor of the podcast for its second season which will focus on the messy (and beautiful!) realities of living in community.

Open House Weekend

And of course, in one week we will open our doors for National Cohousing Open House Weekend. This is our opportunity to show the world why we believe cohousing is part of a better world. With over 40 events nationwide, this weekend is a powerful representation of dreams replicating at scale.

National Cohousing Open House Weekend

May 6-7, 2023

In just a few days, cohousing communities across the country will open their doors to neighbors and friends from their surrounding communities. National Open House Weekend is our chance to share the story of cohousing - who we are, how we live, and why we love this way of life.

There are two ways to engage with this weekend:

1) Host a gathering of your own. Events can be virtual or in-person, and we welcome participation from existing, forming and regional groups. Submit your event here.

2) Attend an Open House in your area, or virtual event anywhere! Our list of events will be updated regularly, so check back often to see what’s happening.

There are already over 40 events registered all across the country! Sign up today to add your event to the map!

The Cohousing Institute's first spring training program may be winding down, but you can still catch the replay! All events are recorded, so if you missed one of our previous sessions, you can still register and access the video. Partners, remember to use your code at registration to receive your discount.

(Need based scholarships are available supporting our commitment to inclusion)
