Architecture and Cityscape Walking Tours
Next week, on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, students have a unique opportunity to experience a docent-led tour of the Morgan Library and Museum (Course 11835). The building was originally designed by Charles McKim of McKim, Mead & White, and expanded in 2006 by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano. Additional tours are being scheduled to accommodate demand, so please add your name to the waiting list if interested.
Once his popular Great Architects of the Western World lecture series ends, architectural historian Francis Morrone will spend his Wednesday afternoons showing off the East River Vistas in New York City. Beekman Place and Sutton Place (Course 11822) are the destination on May 31, 2023, while Cherokee Place and East End Avenue (Course 11821) will be explored on June 7, 2023. Both tours provide students with the history of the transformation of these streets from working class and industrial zones into the ritzy neighborhoods of today.
Trained docent and educational guide Ginny Poleman will also be venturing into the city with four Thursday morning tours currently in the calendar. On May 11, she heads to Historic Riverside Drive (Course 11765) to show off the many Beaux Arts buildings and monuments lining the Hudson and learn the answer to the riddle of who is buried in Grant's Tomb. This tour is the perfect companion to those who just attended her online lecture Gilded Age Mansions of Riverside Drive, the Other Millionaire’s Row. On May 25, 2023, she heads into Central Park, an Outdoor Art Museum (Course 11766) for an opportunity to appreciate the handiwork of Frederick Law Olmsted, among others. Bryant Park, Midtown Oasis (Course 11767) will be the focus on June 8, 2023, while students will also view vintage photographs and hear stories of the park's history, sculptures, library, and neighboring buildings, including the American Radiator Building, an historic landmark. Historic Chelsea (Course 11768) on June 22, 2023, and Soho's Historic Architecture (Course 11769) on July 13, 2023, are Poleman's final two outings this semester.

New to the faculty, licensed NYC tour guide Stephanie Simon will introduce students to the Magical Gardens of the East Village (Course 11918) on Tuesday, May 23, 2023. Explore many of the neighborhood's 40 distinct urban sanctuaries and learn about their history, maintenance, and importance of these community gardens to the East Village culture.

Tour sizes are capped for a personalized experience. Register early to ensure you have a spot!
