Memorial Cup presented by Kia Press Conference
|
The 2024 Memorial Cup presented by Kia will be hosted by the Saginaw Spirit, the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) recently announced. It will be the first time that the CHL's championship series is hosted south of the border in 26 years, and the very first time that the Memorial Cup will be hosted by an American city in the Ontario Hockey League. The last time the prestigious tournament was hosted in the United States was back in 1998 when the Portland Winterhawks hosted and won the Memorial Cup.
“The Memorial Cup coming here to Saginaw is a dream come true. We’ve always wanted to win the Memorial Cup, and now we’ve got that opportunity as the host team,” said Saginaw Spirit President and managing partner Craig Goslin. “Our community will be on display for all to see throughout Canada and the U.S. and internationally as well."
The Cup will generate an estimated $25 million in community impact and more than $3 million has been allocated to make improvements prior to the series. They include renovations to TheDow Event Center and improvements to a nearby plaza and Hoyt Park.

Ascension & Covenant Partner for Air Transportation
|
Ascension St. Mary’s and Covenant HealthCare have begun a partnership for emergency air medical transportation services provided by FlightCare. Covenant is entering a preferred provider agreement with Ascension St. Mary’s FlightCare, which is operated by Med-Trans, a member of the Global Medical Response family.
“It’s the patients who truly benefit from this healthcare partnership,” said Beth Charlton, president and CEO of Covenant HealthCare. “Air transportation is a key component in responding to emergency medical situations. Our mission is to ensure services are available to patients who need them. Initiating this local collaboration made sense as we continue to fulfill our mission.”
FlightCare was established in 1987 and is located at Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw. FlightCare transports patients throughout Michigan's lower peninsula and is dedicated to providing quality patient care to critically ill or injured individuals from accident scenes and interhospital transport. The team consists of pilots, flight nurses, flight paramedics, mechanics and more. For infants with critical needs, the Covenant Transport Team lends its expertise to support safe transfers to the Covenant Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (RNICU). The Covenant RNICU is a 55-bed unit, certified to provide the highest level of care for babies in mid to northern Michigan.
“FlightCare has flown thousands of patients over the course of their years of dedicated service, led by a highly-skilled medical team, some who have been with the program since inception,” said Stephanie Duggan, MD, FACEP, FAAPL, CPE, regional president and CEO, Mid/North Region, Ascension Michigan. “Highly trained and experienced in critical care and advanced lifesaving skills, the FlightCare team is committed to providing each patient with the care they need, when they need it.”
Ascension St. Mary’s and Covenant have a history of partnering for local emergency medical services. In 1994, the two organizations established Mobile Medical Response (MMR) in an effort to provide a high-performance emergency medical service system in Saginaw County.

Michigan Sugar Announces Next President and CEO
|
A native of North Dakota, Juhnke comes to Michigan Sugar to continue a career in the agribusiness sector that stretches back to 1990. He replaces retiring President and CEO Mark S. Flegenheimer who led Michigan Sugar the past two and a half decades.
“My family and I are incredibly excited for the opportunity that lies ahead,” said Juhnke, who began his career at American Crystal Sugar Company in Moorhead, Minnesota, and spent 15 years there working his way up to become Ag Operations Manager, where he was responsible for the harvest, storage, and transportation of the company’s sugarbeet crop and served on the company’s Executive Operating Committee. “I am very much looking forward to returning to my roots and working alongside Michigan Sugar Company’s world-class grower-owners and its talented workforce.”
Juhnke earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1990 from North Dakota State University and in 2002 completed the Essentials of Management Program at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
After leaving American Crystal in 2005, Juhnke was instrumental in the founding and development of Northstar Agri Industries, where he led the development and construction of a successful canola processing and refining plant near Hallock, Minnesota. Juhnke later became President and Chief Operating Officer, overseeing the processing of more than 400,000 tons of canola seed annually into canola oil and canola meal.
More recently, Juhnke served as Vice President of Manufacturing and Operations for Fargo, North Dakota-based Red River Commodities Inc., a food processing company, with four divisions – including the well-known SunButter LLC – and seven factories spread across Kansas, North Dakota, and Texas. During his time there, Juhnke led a strategic operations initiative, improving the company’s safety, capital deployment, plant maintenance, and production management processes.

Hausbeck Pickles and Peppers Turns 100
|
How many companies in Saginaw have been around for 100 years…still going stronger than ever? Few if any. One notable exception is Hausbeck Pickles & Peppers Company, which kicked off its 100-year anniversary celebration with the Saginaw Spirit in March at TheDow. The thunder pickle hockey game heralds the beginning of a special year filled with festivities. The “big event” will come in mid October with the First Annual Hausbeck PickleBall Tournament at Garber Courts in Saginaw – a community event welcoming players of all ages and skill.
“Hausbeck Pickles & Peppers aren’t widely known as a brand outside of Saginaw. And that’s okay,” says Tim Hausbeck, president. “Chances are, everyone eats our pickles and peppers at some of the most popular quick serve chain restaurants that serve pizzas, salads, subs, soups and sandwiches. We’re pretty proud of the fact that 60 semi-truck loads of Hausbeck product leave our plant each week to enhance the flavor of food served all around the country.” Tim (president) and his brother, Joe (vice president) lead the company with its 100+ employees, manufacturing complex on Hess St., and sprawling tank yard on Michigan Ave. that holds 500 million pounds of cucumbers. With the nationwide fast-food market growing by at least 30-40% in the 1980s, Hausbeck landed it first fast-food contract with Burger King – a game changer. In 2001, the company landed Subway as a customer and added banana peppers and jalapeno peppers to its product line. Land locked at its original location on East St., the company relocated to its current facility on Hess in 2005. Hausbeck added a 80,000 sq. ft. warehouse in 2020.

Wolgast Corporation Marks 75th Anniversary!
|
For the first 52 years, the Wolgast family owned and operated Wolgast Corporation. Started by Gerald Wolgast as G.H. Wolgast Masonry in 1948, his motto of “Do it right the first time, every time” has been his legacy that still steers the company today. Gerald’s sons, Lynn and the late Patrick and Mark Wolgast left their own legacy on the general contracting company by diversifying to include Design-Build and Construction Management services, helping start the local Associated Builders and Contractors Association Chapter, and forging a relationship with McDonald’s Corporation in the 1980s. Since then, we have built close to 300 new or rebuilt McDonald’s restaurants and remodeled nearly twice that many. The Wolgast brothers also chose to succeed their business to the employees and started the process of becoming an Employee-Owned Company in 2000. Soon after, they named Brian Stadler as President, marking the first time that a non-family member held such a key position.
The following 23 years have been significant to our longevity by becoming 100% Employee-Owned, adding Restoration, Multi-Family Housing, and Development Divisions, adopting a systemized approach to be process driven, implementing our own Carpentry Apprenticeship program to strengthen our self-performing capabilities, and expanding to additional Michigan locations. Wolgast now has offices in Saginaw, Freeland, Grand Rapids, and Alpena. Furthermore, we have 105 employee-owners who participate in profit sharing and employee stock benefits. In 2021, the Board of Directors appointed Steve Salyers as President, while Stadler maintained the role of CEO.
