El Camino Spotlight: Ken Brown Memorial Scholarship Continues Legacy of Beloved Trustee and Educator
Trustee Brown made a huge impact on everyone he met, and that impact continues today. To date, over $50,000 has been raised through the Ken Brown Memorial Scholarship, which honors Trustee Brown's extraordinary life and legacy. A generous $25,000 gift was announced by Northrop Grumman, where Brown worked for over six years as the Operations Manager in their Space Systems division.
The Ken Brown Memorial Scholarship was established by his family to further Brown's life of service, dedication to the success of community college students, and promote his love of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The scholarship will provide El Camino College students an opportunity to attend an HBCU, and enjoy a phenomenal education like the one Ken experienced at Morehouse College.
Tribute gifts may still be made in Ken's honor by donating HERE.

Department Spotlight: Forensics Team Sweeps National Tourney
The ECC Forensics Team recently returned from the Phi Rho Pi National Tournament in Washington, DC where they retained the Debate National Championship for the 6th straight year! The tournament attracted 55 Community Colleges with almost 600 competitors.
Many El Camino students earned gold medals in events from impromptu speaking and extemporaneous speaking to several different debate events. Three students advanced to elimination rounds in all four of the events in which they were entered: Uzair Pasta, Josiah Edwards, and Cody Hagemeier, where Hagemeier won the top speaker in the nation! This is a tremendous accomplishment that has not been achieved since 2001. Additionally, Jana Abulaban was awarded the Warren-Dahlin Fellowship Award. This is a regional award, voted on by students from all over Southern California for the competitor who most exemplifies the best qualities in intercollegiate forensics. Congratulations to the entire team -- we are so proud of you!

Community Spotlight: Women's History Month Celebrated at the LAAFB Honoring Women in the Military
The El Segundo and Torrance Area Chambers of Commerce joined forces to attend the Empowered Minds Female Leadership Panel at the Los Angeles Air Force Base in March. El Camino College and the ECC Foundation are proud members of both Chambers.
Col. Mia Walsh, commander, Space Base Delta 3 hosted the event, which had the theme "Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories." Walsh shared a unique fact that this is the first time in history all of the commanders in Southern California are female. In addition to Walsh, the panel featured Capt. Jessica O'Brien (Navy, Seal Beach), LTC Manju Vig (Army, Los Alamitos), and CMDR Lisa M. Sharkey (Coast Guard, Long Beach).
March is designated as Women’s History Month and honors women’s contributions to history, culture, and social progress. Women soldiers and civilian employees have made tremendous contributions in service, with more than 3 million women serving our country to date. The panel discussed their personal journey, life lessons, and military experiences that helped shape them into the leaders they are today. Read more about the event HERE.
