A Collection of Videos about Difficult Conversations, Confrontation, and Embracing the Uncomfortable by Simon Sinek
Justin Porter, a TLP Cohort 8 member, collected three videos by Simon Sinek to use at one of his Department of Public Work’s weekly leadership team meetings. He encourages everyone in an organization, from the top down, to watch these three videos because most people do not want to have difficult conversations (video 1) as they tend to lead to confrontation (video 2) which ends up being uncomfortable (video 3). The videos are short, 3 minutes or less, and give pointers on how to manage these issues. Justin has noticed that implementing the methods he has learned from these videos has allowed him to address issues within his department quickly and effectively.
On March 29th, the T2 Center launched a new virtual opportunity for the Transportation Leadership Program participants, TLP Quick Connects. TLP Quick Connects is a 1 to 1.5 hour virtual event. These virtual events are not required to complete the TLP program, they give participants a chance to stay connected with their Cohort between in-person sessions and pick up helpful resources.
At the first TLP Quick Connects event, The Power of Email Communications, Cohort 8 members picked up good tips and resources on proper email etiquette and how to organize email efficiently. Attendees were introduced to a new T2 Technical Brief, Email Etiquette, to share with their crews and colleagues. It was a great virtual discussion!
We are busy planning new TLP Quick Connects events, so keep an eye out for future promotions. These events are invite-only.
"Turn the Ship Around! A True Story of Turning Followers into Leaders " by L. David Marquet -Book Reviewed by TLP Cohort #8 Member
Turn the Ship Around is about the experiment of Captain Marquet finding a better way to command a US Naval Submarine that empowers a whole crew and challenges us on how we look at leadership, the development of leaders, and the treatment of subordinates. Captain Marquet attempts to change the “leader-follower” model of commanding to a “leader-leader” model. Captain Marquet takes us on a journey with the whole crew of the USS Sante Fe, as he attempts to transform this infamous crew of aimless sailors to a finely tuned cohesive unit.
Marquet’s brilliance in this journey was him tapping into the knowledge and goodwill of the crew. Early on in the book Marquet realized the importance of one feeling empowered and trusted to make the right decisions. Marquet wanted to bring that with him to his ship that he had full command of. This journey of Marquet and his crew becoming a fully cohesive, competent, and empowered unit that had full clarity of their missions is simply remarkable. How you treat people goes a long way. The duty of true leadership to put your crew first and lead by example goes a long way. Giving the freedom to your subordinates to make decisions goes a long way. Holding your tongue as a leader to let someone speak fully goes a long way. Talking to your people to learn about them and what they care about goes a long way. People questioning things instead of aimlessly following orders is important. Building trust and taking care of your people is vital.
Leadership takes place at every level. From the bottom to the top. That is the main theme of the book. Treating everyone like they are a leader and not an inferior is something not just honorable, but beneficial for the entirety of one's organization.
"Confidence isn't a feeling; it's the willingness to try. "
