Over 3,300 people have signed the Open Letter to Baptist Women!
|
|
In light of recent actions of an SBC pastor in an attempt to get numerous churches disfellowshipped from the Southern Baptist Convention for having women on their staff with the title of "pastor," Baptist Women in Ministry began circulating an open letter to Baptist women on April 5. The letter grew out of a desire of women named on a list of these churches to send a message of affirmation to Baptist women. The pastors targeted by this move wanted to let Baptist women know that they are fully valued by God and they deserve to be fully valued by God's people.
The response to the open letter has been overwhelming with signatures from across the United States including Puerto Rico, and also from the United Kingdom, Germany, New Zealand, and beyond! SBC leaders have taken notice of the letter and its response, and even though their remarks have been negative, we hope that their mention of it spreads our positive message of hope in the midst of persistent exclusion.
Some people have asked if there are plans to deliver or send this letter to the SBC leadership in an effort to change the current movement against women ministers. The answer to that question at this time is no. The letter is simply an attempt to help women hear a message of their value despite the numerous messages they hear to the contrary. Even if it is a seed planted in people's heads that there are Baptists who believe there are no limits to how women can participate in God's work, that is a win! The more patriarchy is asserted among these Baptist groups, the less safe women are emotionally, spiritually, and physically. If one person finds greater safety and health because of this letter, it is worth every signature.
If you haven't signed the open letter yet or have family or friends who need to hear its message, we hope you will sign and forward.
