Ireland Park Outdoor Courts to have dedicated Pickleball Times

As part of a one-year pilot project, the outdoor courts at Ireland Park will have dedicated times for pickleball play. Outside of the dedicated pickleball times, the outdoor courts will be available for both pickleball and tennis on a first come, first served basis for 30-minutes at a time. Ireland Park has four lined pickleball courts within tennis courts.

After the 2023 outdoor court season ends in the fall, City staff will review the project and make a decision whether to cancel, modify or continue the schedule next year.

Dedicated pickleball times

Monday, Wednesday, Friday – 8 a.m. to noon

Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday – 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Sunday – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

No matter who is using the courts, we ask everyone to follow the rules of etiquette including keeping the area clean and follow all fair play and sportsmanship rules.

Additional outdoor courts

The City’s outdoor courts will begin to open the week of April 11 and are expected to all be open by mid-April.

City Wide Parking Permit Update

I have been receiving inquiries from Ward 6 residents regarding next steps for the City wide parking permit now that the survey deadline has closed.

The survey was the first step in gauging public appetite for a future residential on-street parking permit. The data collection was wrapped up on March 6 and has been with our Engagement staff being analyzed. They are also working on some geospatial analysis to give us details about where the responses were coming from so Transportation can locate “hot spots” and find specific areas of high concern.

Parking Services will use the survey results to inform and ultimately support the recommendation of instituting a City-Wide Parking Permit. We expect the final report to come forward to Council at the end of 2023.

Parking Services and Engagement staff will provide an update on the Get Involved webpage that summarizes “what we heard” at a very high level and key take aways from the data and next steps in terms of study completion. Staff are working on this and are hoping to post the information in the coming weeks.

To receive an update on the survey and other City news you may subscribe to the City’s “Get Involved webpage. When you subscribe you will receive the latest information and notifications when updates become available.

Transportation staff will be working on this over the summer months and circle back for one additional round of engagement on the proposed permit system in the fall 2023 and recommend the final permit system at the end of Q4 2023. At this time, this is the proposed timeline.

Hydro One Tree and Vegetation Maintenance

Hydro One has advised the City that they will be conducting a vegetation maintenance program in some areas in Ward 6 and across the City.

Hydro One is responsible for maintaining a safe distance between vegetation and power lines to keep the corridor safe for public use, keep the lights on, and to allow easy and safe access for their crews. This important work ensures that Hydro One can continue to provide a supply of safe and reliable electricity to residents in the City of Burlington.

Hazardous vegetation will be trimmed or removed, if they pose a risk to the electrical system, including:

  • Mature trees will be trimmed or removed depending on their location within the corridor and species type
  • Mature trees that are diseased, dying, or have structural defects will be removed
  • Fast growing young trees or brush will be removed, including certain sections of thick vegetation of this type

Residents in the maintenance area will receive a notification or may be contacted personally if your property will be affected.

City News

Spring Clean Up

It’s that time of year when the City’s Roads, Parks & Forestry department shift their focus from winter snow clearing to spring seasonal activities. Accordingly, our formal spring cleanup program is in progress and scheduled for the coming weeks.

As weather permits, staff have already started on many cleanup activities and will continue with all resources dedicated over the next six to eight weeks to the following:

  • Boulevard litter cleanup along major roads and collectors, known problem areas and litter cleanup in parks.
  • Flushing of bridge decks, street medians and sweeping of major road sidewalks.
  • Street sweeping starting with major and collector roads, then moving into residential roads.
  • Sod repair from snow clearing operations starting with major and collector roads, then moving into residential roads.
  • Reactivation of seasonal washrooms and drinking fountains.
  • Pothole filling and roadside shoulder repairs are ongoing.
  • Inspection and clearing of drainage inlets are ongoing.

2023 Street Tree Prunning Program

The City of Burlington will be undertaking the 2023 street tree pruning program starting in late April.

The area to be pruned will be Walkers Line – Mainway – Burloak Drive – Dundas Street – 407ETR.

Pruning of city street trees is provided at least once every 7-years. The 7-year cycle is primarily based on the characteristics of trees and the fact they are living organisms and their health can be affected by many external factors. One of the primary objectives of the grid pruning program is to mitigate any potential hazards within a tree, such as large deadwood and any obvious weakened and/or diseased limbs. Clearance pruning over sidewalks and roadways, where applicable, will be performed to allow for unimpeded pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Where required, low limbs from private trees encroaching over sidewalks or roadways will also be pruned back to allow for safe passage. Pruning is also an important practice to maintain a tree’s structural integrity and overall health, as well as aesthetics.

All pruned limbs and wood will be picked up within 2-days of the pruning operation.

The work will be performed by trained crews in accordance with the approved City of Burlington Tree Pruning Standards and in accordance with the International Society of Arboriculture best practices.

These important maintenance programs help to mitigate potential hazards within City trees, and ultimately contribute to a strong, more resilient urban forest.

Operational questions related to the City’s Grid maintenance program can be directed to:

city@burlington.ca.

In-person assessment:

A trained assessor will come to your house to complete a 50-point visual assessment of potential ways that water can enter your home. The visit will take 60 to 90 minutes. Within one week, you will receive an easy-to-read report with actions to:

  • Reduce risk of damage to structure and contents,
  • Manage infiltration, sewer back-up, and overland flood risk,
  • Manage water onsite wisely,
  • Manage indoor humidity to reduce mold and mildew risk, and
  • Understand risks as they relate to insurance coverage.

You will also have access to:

  • A live customer service helpline, and
  • An optional 15-minute personal follow-up from the assessor.

Remote assessment:

Take and submit photos of required features in your basement and around your property. Burlington Arts & Culture Fund - 19 New Projects

The City of Burlington’s annual Burlington Arts and Culture Fund (BACF) grant program has awarded funding support to 19 projects this year.
