April 2023 Anno Domini
"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38-39

April brings the promise of spring, but more importantly than the season itself is that in the life of faith it is the season of Easter.
Easter is more than one Sunday, it is a way of life. The promise of the resurrection is that Jesus is with us always.
It seems as we move past the one day of Easter, which is April 9th this year, we can sometimes forget that more than Easter eggs, and more than family gatherings, the promise of the Risen Christ is eternal!
It is, perhaps, simpler to see that on April 9th than it is on May 2nd or July 27th, or in the dog days of August, but let’s hold fast to the Easter promise.
For me, the greatest evidence of Easter is that all the disciples saw something that first Easter that made them go and share the Good News and, indeed, for all (except John who died a natural death), gave their lives for the sake of their Risen Lord.
When life is tough, when health is a challenge, or finances tight, hold on to the Easter promise. He is Risen, indeed!
In Christ,
Pastor Jeff

Church of
The Holy Sepulchre
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is located in Jerusalem and dates to the 4th century CE. It houses two significant traditional sites of Jesus, where Christ was crucified and where Christ was buried.
The church has been rebuilt and added on to over so many centuries that today the site is a labyrinth-like layout with several different denominations staking claim to various parts of the church. The view in the photograph was a former side-entrance which today is the main entrance into the church. The site today is located within the walls of the modern "Old City," but in Jesus' time this site would have been on the rock of Golgotha, outside of the city walls.

I find myself having so many memories regarding Easter.
I remember at five years old wearing my Easter dress, gloves and hat and going to church with my offering tied in a handkerchief. I think of my Easter experiences as a college student, singing in the choir but didn’t time my arrival to church well. I walked into a dark and somber Good Friday vigil service in a bright yellow dress that didn’t seem to be the appropriate attire for the mood of that service! In that same mode years later, I almost missed Easter Sunrise service after having sung the St. John Passion the night before with the Phoenix Symphony, getting to church just in time to slide onto the piano bench to play the opening hymn. As a mom, Easter was 'fun' with all the experiences of corralling the children in church! An extremely powerful memory is the loss of my Mom on one Easter Sunday. My brother called me as I was driving home from church to tell me the news, and I almost drove off the road. Through it all, the Word and music of Lent and Easter has sustained and strengthened me. I look forward every year to Maundy Thursday and the Last Supper followed by Good Friday and the crucifixion. Perhaps, “look forward” isn’t the correct expression. All the feelings that come forth during the Triduum, which is the culmination of Lent and the three days that follow, these are the holiest of times. My prayer is that you are able to attend Maundy Thursday and Good Friday because those days really give strength and meaning to Easter. However late you think you are, however many chances you think you have missed, however many mistakes you feel you have made, or however far from home and family and God you feel you have traveled, you are welcome and loved by God at all times.
Wishing you a blessed and Happy Easter!

The Organist's Corner
With Dr. Jeremy Peterman
Yet another Jeremy project! There’s something intriguing on our campus that you’ve probably never known about! As of February of this year, there is another usable pipe organ hanging out just 10 feet from the sanctuary. I don’t know where this organ will eventually end up, but I’m currently working on it and getting it in playable shape again. With the help of Eddie Medina and Chris Layman, we removed it from an estate in Gold Canyon in April of 2021 and I am now making great progress on refurbishing it; I learn as I go and am lucky to have local and visiting organ technicians stop by and help me, free of charge. They get a kick out of “playing” and tinkering as much as I do. Also, Gary Spears has been instrumental in assisting me with the electronic aspects. So if you see me wearing work pants under my choir robe, I’m probably off to work on this little organ after the service!
