Leadership Corner

Leadership, in many ways, comes down to our ability to articulate a vision and then in turn our ability to influence others around that vision.

Sounds easy, of course, and yet we know in our lived experience that it's actually very hard. Noted professor Jonah Berger, in his recent book Magic Words, suggests that there are actually a range of scientifically based methods for increasing our ability to influence outcomes. Among his recommendations is the simple idea that asking questions and asking for advice are great ways to build influence--both, in the end, suggest that we are interested in other people and by showing interest we're more likely to influence.

Sounds simple. Possibly profound.

Clark Twiddy, President of Twiddy & Company, is the author of our Leadership Corner, published on our blog the third Tuesday of each month. He can be reached at ctwiddy@twiddy.com.

What Makes Robotic Surgery a Mainstream Choice?

The future of medicine has arrived.

With enhanced surgical accuracy, Robotic Surgery is here to stay. But how exactly does this type of minimally invasive surgery work?

Despite it sounding futuristic, robotic surgery is not automated. It requires a surgeon who is dual trained in robotics and an applicable medical sub-specialty, such as general surgery, gynecology, gastroenterology, neurosurgery and more.

Tiny instruments and advanced optics allow for new possibilities.

During a robotic procedure, surgeons use a console to maneuver miniaturized instruments mounted on robotic arms. The small instrument size allows them to fit where larger, hand-held instruments cannot. This has enabled doctors to offer surgeries that weren’t available before.

Robotic surgery also offers doctors more advanced optics. The scope provides 3-D vision at a magnification 10 times larger than the naked eye. This expanded view of the anatomy and structures improves precision and safety.

Robotics can offer a superior surgical experience.

While robotic surgery isn’t an option for every patient or available for every procedure, it’s a great option when it is appropriate. The combination of a smaller incision and a better-quality view for the surgeon can result in a faster recovery time, less pain, fewer complications, a shorter hospital stay and improved results.

Chesapeake Regional Healthcare provides expert clinicians and innovative surgical solutions to offer patients the most effective, surgical services available. Learn more here or call Chesapeake Regional Surgical Specialists – Elizabeth City at 252-334-1602.

Jalila Milne Named Outer Banks Health Employee of the Month for March 2023

Jalila joined Outer Banks Health in August, 2009. During that time, she has proven herself to be a vital asset to hospital operations. She is a go-to person among hospital team members for most any operational questions. She consistently provides support and a

positive perspective, an ability to take the lead, and a “can-do” attitude. Even though she has a full workload, she always takes the time to offer a helping hand and is one of the most reliable people on the team. Often seen volunteering at community events, Jalila is well-loved among team members and the community alike. She is truly the glue that holds the administrative team together.

Blue Water celebrates heroes during First Responders Weekend at Outer Banks West KOA

Blue Water has once again celebrated local heroes including first responders, and military and medical personnel, at Outer Banks West/Currituck Sound KOA Holiday for their 3rd Annual First Responders Weekend from March 24th to the 26th. In addition to the variety of included amenities Outer Banks West KOA offers to help first responders have memorable experiences, the property also featured over 30 vendors over the weekend including Harley Davidson, Braxton Flags, Salty Sailor Apothecary, Old Man Design, and many more.

“We love giving back to our community whenever we have the opportunity,” said Angi Bingham, General Manager of Outer Banks West/Currituck Sound KOA Holiday. “This has turned into a local tradition that many in our community look forward to every year, including our staff.”

This year’s event featured multiple food trucks, music from J-Heard & The Henchman and other acts, Bounce & Boogie Bounce House for the kids, a community bonfire, Patriot Guard Parade, and an appearance from the Lizard Land Reptile show.  The campground also honored one of its own with the annual “Robert Helfant Memorial Parade”, paying tribute to the founder of the event who was a member of the Virginia Beach Fire Department for 26 years.

The 3rd annual First Responders Weekend also featured appearances by Smokey Bear, beer bingo, and a mobile cigar lounge. All activities were open to the public throughout the weekend. Blue Water requested guests attending the event to “Pay it Forward” and contribute to a collection for the Currituck Animal Shelter.

The 3rd annual First Responders Weekend at Outer Banks West/Currituck Sound KOA Holiday would not have been possible without the support of the Currituck Chamber of Commerce, Lower Currituck Fire Rescue, North Carolina Patriot Guard Riders, Currituck Animal Shelter, DJ Alan Bain, Outer Banks Harley Davidson, and Sanctuary Vineyards.

Why Hire an Agency?

5 reasons why you should consider hiring an agency

Why would a company hire an agency for Marketing help? While that answer varies for many organizations, there are several benefits to hiring an Agency to provide support for Social Media Marketing, SEO, Digital Marketing and more.

1. An Agency is an unbiased extension of your company. Since an agency works with many different types of businesses, they often possess additional experience and knowledge of audiences, platforms, voice, tone, and more. Businesses can use their retainer as a way of bouncing ideas off of like-minded professionals who will be able to discern or advise steps towards success.

2. The Agency Team will traditionally carry years of experience and levels of support that often go beyond your internal team. With the depth and breadth of the team experience, you are able to fill gaps where your company may require support.

3. Ever-changing platforms and algorithms allows for a lot of catching up in order to be relevant or successful. Agencies live, breathe and eat what is current in their respective disciplines and are poised to ensure that your keywords, messaging, PPC ads and more are set up for success.

4. Cost savings. Yep, the bottom line is often your bottom line. Having an Agency on retainer also saves a business money in the long run. The spend for an Agency retainer is far less than a salary and benefits for another Full-Time-Employee, or two.

5. A true partner that you can count on. There’s a reason why you have a retainer with an agency. The minute that the work begins to pile up and you require more assistance, a sounding board, someone to help with creative and more, your agency is there for you and to get you through it without having to overwork your current team and create unnecessary stress.

Meet Bruce Lorenz of Lorenz Fine Photography

For over 35 years I have been behind the lens.

Many years ago I chose to specialize in portraiture of business executives, families, children and pets. The spontaneity is energizing. There are literally hundreds of moments to be captured. What an honor it is to be commissioned to preserve a very special portion of a family's history.

I have been awarded the degree of Master Photographer by the Professional Photographers Association of America, one of only several hundred in the entire country.

My commissioned works are in homes and galleries throughout the world.

As many of you know, in January of 2004, after nearly 23 years, I sold my interest in my three photography studios

and ventured out on my own.

Mostly because it “just wasn’t fun anymore”, but also, getting ready to turn the big “five oh”, it was definitely time for a change. I felt that my work was stagnating; I wasn’t a photographer creating exciting images anymore. I was spending all of my time running the business.

I now work by appointment from two very different locations. In New Jersey I work from my home in Hackettstown and on location over the entire New Jersey / New York metropolitan area.

During the summer months, I work from my location on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Located just half a mile from the beach in the Historic Village of Corolla, my studio/gallery is just a stone's throw from the Currituck County Lighthouse.

With a great mix of location and studio assignments, and with an amazing group of clients from all over the country, I am once again creating images that are

“unique and exquisite”.

I currently reside in New Jersey, and in Corolla, North Carolina, with my wife, three children (they all are now out on their own), a couple of sons in laws, four grandkids, a 15 year old Jack Russell Terrier and a 9 year old (guesstimate) rescue mixed breed that found us a couple of years ago.

All the best,

Bruce Lorenz

Are You Looking for Hope?

Welcome to the Currituck Resource Center. When a problem or event occurs in our lives it seems the quickest thing to lose is hope. When hope begins to wane, we often feel alone or sense that no one cares or knows what we are going through. Rebuilding hope can be hard, yet it is very rewarding. It leads to second and third opportunities in our own healing and shares hope with others. This healing is best fostered by relationships and the encouragement that comes from them. Our best opportunity in healing comes from sharing our story of healing with others, knowing that we are not alone. If you are looking for hope today come be a part of Celebrate Recovery every Friday night at 7:00 PM at our center at 162 Griggs Acres Rd. in Point Harbor. Celebrate recovery is a faith based program to help heal our lives from hurts, hangups, and habits.

We here at the Currituck Resource Center are in the beginning stage of developing times of training to help others learn how to tell their stories of hope. We look forward as we develop training in coaching and mentoring others, in the hope of reaching those in our community and beyond. If you would like to learn more this opportunity, stop by our booth at the “all wheels car show” on April 29th at the Currituck County High School 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM. You can also join us for a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday May 3, 2023 from 3:00 – 4:00 PM at 162 Griggs Acres Rd. in Point Harbor. Thanks ahead of time for helping to build a better community.

History for Lunch

Air Quality Relating to Water Quality Through Purple Air Sensors

The Museum of the Albemarle will host a 2nd History for Lunch on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at 12 p.m. in the Gaither

Auditorium. Colleen Karl with the Edenton-Chowan Environmental Group will discuss the purple air sensors that capture any increase in air particles that may be released from Cyanobacteria blooms. The sensors are installed across Northeast North Carolina, with one being at the Museum of the Albemarle. Sensors are designed to measure small particles and convert them to a usable index of air quality. The data is recorded in real-time and continuously updated on a map. Learn about air quality as it relates to water quality. Project made possible by the Community Collaborative Research Grant Program, supported by North Carolina Sea Grant and the state’s Water Resources Research Institute, in partnership with the William R. Kenan Jr. Institute for Engineering, Technology and Science based at North Carolina State University.

The Museum will offer History for Lunch in-person and through Zoom. Register in advance through the Museum’s Facebook page or website to receive a link to attend the lecture virtually.

The virtual program is supported by Friends of the Museum of the Albemarle.
