An Oasis in the Desert 4-H Summer Camp

 

Southern Nevada 4-H Camp and Learning Center in Alamo, NV

June 5, 2023 - June 9, 2023

 

This 4-H Summer camp is a 5-day, overnight, teen camp that will be hosted at the new Southern Nevada 4-H Camp and Learning Center in Alamo, NV! During this time, youth will participate in activities that include nature explorations, sports games, wildlife observation and more.


The camp is open to all Clark County, NV teens in grades 9 -12 (as of June 2023). Registration for camp will be accepted from Monday, April 3 - Wednesday, May 16, 2023, at 5 p.m. or until all spots are filled. Camp fee is $50 for the week.

State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest


Reno Livestock Event Center: May 10, 2023


The primary goal of the State 4-H Livestock contests is to recognize and interpret visual differences between livestock animals and to understand livestock production and management practices. These are valuable skills for youth to learn, comprehend, and utilize.


There are two divisions for Judging, 4-H Division and FFA, Grange, or Independent Youth Division. Each division has three age categories (age, as of January 1, 2022): Junior (ages 9 to 10 years old), Intermediate (11 to 13 years old), and Senior (14 to 19 years old).


Registration Deadline: May 1, 2023


Checks can be made out to the Board of Regents and should be sent to the Churchill County Office.

2023 4-H Essay Writing Contest:

The Importance of Beeswax


National Deadline Submission Due By: May 1, 2023

Winners Announced: June 15, 2023


The Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees announced its 2023 4-H Essay Writing Contest. The topic is "The Importance of Beeswax!"


In their submissions, students should explore the many ways that beeswax is important to the hive and their favorite way beeswax is used outside of the hive. Three cash prizes will be awarded to the three highest scoring essays.


This competition is open only to active 4-H Club Members.

The 2023 National 4-H Shooting Sports Teen Leadership Institute

 

Southern Nevada 4-H Camp & Learning Center in Alamo, NV

August 8, 2023, to August 12, 2023. 

 

The National 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador Program is designed to promote 4-H and 4-H Shooting Sports. Youth selected to serve as Ambassadors will receive training that will allow them to return to their homes and advocate for the program at the county, regional, and state level. Some Ambassadors may be asked to support national events as well. Ambassadors provide public relations support at special events such as donor/sponsor functions and also serve as spokespersons for the 4-H Shooting Sports Program, helping to make 4-H and the 4-H Shooting Sports Programs more visible. The Ambassador’s further develop their skills in leadership, public presentation, citizenship, community service, public relations and team building. 

 

This opportunity is open to any youth in Nevada who is enrolled in a 4-H shooting sports project, is at least 15 years old, and has at least 1 year left in 4-H. All lodging, meals, transportation during the event and materials will be provided by generous donations from the National 4-H Shooting Sports Steering Committee General Fund.

University of Nevada, Reno Extension is looking for qualified professionals to fill the following 4-H related job postings:


4-H Community Based Instructor 3


The Community Based Instructor 3 cultivates relationships with community partners to establish 4-H clubs and implement positive youth development programs. 4‑H programs are grounded in the belief that kids learn best by doing. The position works with youth, ages 5-19, families and volunteers using the experiential learning model. The position also coordinates logistics for day camps, overnight camps and special events and fairs. The position is involved in the evaluation of program delivery of 4-H programs to include school enrichment, educator training, overnight camps, day camps, fairs, teen leadership, among others.


The Community Based Instructor 3 also coordinates operational and logistical needs related to the 4-H program in the assigned geographical and topic areas. Other duties include entering and maintaining data in the various online systems. The position implements youth programs in the topic areas of STEM, Animal Science and Agriculture, Civic Engagement and Citizenship, Leadership, Expressive and Creative Arts, Healthy Living, Social and Emotional Learning, Environmental Education, and Family and Consumer Sciences.

4-H Part Time Administrative Assistant/Clerical Support


Job Description

Perform clerical administrative tasks such as entering data, managing data into the 4-H online system, organizing supplies and files, making phone calls, scheduling meetings, taking meeting notes and answering emails. Assist with editing fliers, social media posts, videos and presentations with direction from the supervisor. Assist with logistics for 4-H classes and special events, tasks include: reserving rooms, making purchases of supplies and equipment, loading and unloading equipment to transport to sites and creating sign-in sheets and entering evaluation survey data. Other tasks may include creating documents, contacting community partners and scheduling events, with direction from the supervisor.


Qualifications

Experience with Microsoft Office, and other computer software, experience doing general office clerical duties.

Skills required: time management, follow-through, excellent written and oral communication, team work, reliable and responsible.


Hourly Pay

$11 - $15 an hour, depending on experience.

  • This position will generally work between the hours of 8 am to 5 pm, Monday-Friday with occasional evening and weekend work.
  • This position is based at the University of Nevada Reno Extension at 8050 Paradise Road, Las Vegas, Nevada 89123. Occasionally the incumbent may be able to work remotely, with supervisor approval. 
  • Excellent opportunity for a college student, and anyone interested in working with youth or in education.
