Dear Andrea,

Please no more April showers! We're definitely ready for May flowers! And speaking of May, we are in the home stretch for awarding scholarships for fall 2024 totaling over $900,000! Our staff and Board of Directors are anxious to honor many of the recipients at the Annual Scholarship Dinner on May 16th, where students will meet the generous donors who provide the funds for books, supplies, technology, transportation and more. We are most grateful to these friends of El Camino and can't wait to celebrate with them! We are also getting ready for Commencement which marks a milestone for so many of our students.

Spring has sprung and we are ready!

Warmly,

Andrea Sala

Executive Director

Campus Spotlight: Six Women Recognized with Distinguished Women Awards During Women's History Month

This year’s National Women’s History Month theme was “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion." Last month, El Camino was proud to recognize six women who exemplified this mantra of inclusion in our common quest for freedom and opportunity.

The Women’s History Month Committee sought women from the El Camino College campus and community who have contributed to the college and/or to the surrounding community to honor at the Distinguished Women's Reception.

On March 27th, El Camino College recognized these Distinguished Women who were nominated by their peers and selected by members of the Women's History Month Committee. This year's honorees included: Mele Makalo, Rachel Pittock, Argelia Andrade, Jackie LaBouff (in memoriam), Candy Paula, and Colonel Mia L. Walsh.

Congratulations to all honorees! We enjoyed learning all about you and celebrating your amazing accomplishments while promoting inclusion efforts in and around the South Bay community.

Student Spotlight: El Camino's Forensics Team is Arguably Great!

El Camino's Forensics Team had another successful season! Considered a rebuilding year, the team ended as the #2 overall community college in the nation according to the National Parliamentary Debate Association, earning the #1 spot for both novice and JV debaters. When all 4-year universities were included, El Camino ranked 3rd.

Thanks to the continued generous support of the El Camino College Foundation, six members of the team traveled to Dublin, Ireland for the International Forensics Tournament. The tournament was attended by prestigious US universities including Cornell, Vanderbilt, and Rice, where El Camino advanced four students to elimination rounds. To recognize the Foundation's support, the team now sport patches on their jackets to acknowledge the Foundation's generosity (see team photo).

The team’s final tournament was Phi Rho Pi Nationals in Reno, Nevada where the El Camino team won silver overall in debate. Congratulations to yet another amazing year!
