Remembering Wesley DeJong Jr.: Legacy Endowment Fund Established at LSSU to Honor Beloved Alumnus and Former Hockey Equipment Manager

Back row (l to r) Tory Lindley, Athletic Director, Danny Kinnear, Head Equipment Manager, Mike York, Assistant Hockey Coach, Damon Whitten, Head Hockey Coach, DJ Goldstein, Assistant Hockey Coach, and Andrew Rubinstein, Annual Fund and Athletic Development Director.

With a spirit of generosity and remembrance at its core, family and friends of Wes DeJong, now in memoriam, have collaborated to establish the Wesley DeJong Jr. Legacy Endowment fund at Lake Superior State University (LSSU). This endowment serves as a lasting tribute to the memory of Wes DeJong, a beloved 2017 LSSU graduate and former hockey equipment manager for the university, who tragically passed away in July 2022 at the age of 28.

Lake Superior State University and Laker hockey gave Wes the opportunity to live his dream,” said Wes’s mom, Susie DeJong. Wes’s dad, Wesley Sr. added, “Our desire is to create a legacy for him to give back through the little things needed to help the program day to day. Our hope is these funds will benefit the folks behind the scenes of Laker athletics.”

Wes DeJong's passion for Laker athletics and his dedication to his role as a hockey equipment manager left an indelible mark on the LSSU community. He referred to his position as his ‘dream job’ and his commitment and tireless work ethic endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

“Our campus, and especially those of us in Athletics, will greatly miss Wes,” said Laker Head Hockey Coach, Damon Whitten. “He was universally loved across campus with his huge smile, quick wit, and total commitment to all things Lakers. For over a decade Wes lived his dream of being part of Laker hockey. He inspired us to put the team first, attack each day with good humor, and to find a way to get the job done. He will continue to inspire our Department and Laker hockey.”

The Wesley DeJong Jr. Legacy Endowment fund will play a pivotal role in supporting the Laker Athletic Equipment Managers, providing essential resources to address immediate equipment needs or priority requirements of their respected Division I or Division II programs. This endowment embodies the enduring legacy of Wes DeJong and his profound impact on LSSU athletics.

"Wes was not only a valued member of our LSSU family but also a source of inspiration to all who knew him. This endowment will ensure that his legacy of passion, dedication, and service to athletics continues to thrive for generations to come,” commented Laker Athletic Director, Tory Lindley.

Through this endowment, Wes DeJong's legacy will continue to uplift and empower LSSU's athletic programs, fostering a culture of excellence and teamwork that reflects his enduring spirit. "We are deeply touched by the outpouring of support from the DeJong family and the Laker Hockey community in establishing the Wesley DeJong Jr. Legacy Endowment fund," stated LSSU Interim President Lynn Gillette.

Celebrating 20 Years: Remembering the Historic Journey of the 2004 Lake Superior State University Men's Tennis Team

This year marks the 20th anniversary of a remarkable milestone in the history of Lake Superior State University (LSSU) athletics — the qualification of the 2004 Men's Tennis team for the NCAA tournament. Led by Coach Jon Coles, this team etched its name in the record book of LSSU sports history through a season of outstanding achievements and memorable victories. It was the beginning of a good 5-year run of banners hung in the Student Activity Center, home of Laker Tennis at LSSU.

The 2004 Laker Men's Tennis team had an impressive regular season record of 12-4, showcasing their talent and fortitude on the court. Their stellar performance earned them a spot among the top eight teams in the region, proof of their skill and dedication throughout the year.

One of the defining moments of the season came during the conference tournament, where the Lakers secured a historic victory over Grand Valley State University (GVSU), clinching their first-ever berth in the NCAA tournament. This achievement not only marked a significant milestone for the men's tennis program, but also solidified their place in LSSU's athletic legacy.

Behind the team's success was Coach Jon Coles, whose leadership earned him the honor of being named NCAA Regional Coach of the Year. Coles' acumen played a pivotal role in propelling the team to qualify for the 2004 NCAA Tournament.

The 2004 team included an array of talented players who contributed to their success on the court. Alex Beauregard emerged as a standout player, earning recognition as a 1st Team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and he received LSSU’s prestigious Bud Cooper Coaches Trophy. His exceptional skills and leadership were instrumental in inspiring his teammates to excel.

Additionally, Ludovic Marmet-Demers and Nicolas Simard showcased their talent, earning accolades as 2nd Team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Honorable Mention All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, respectively. Their contributions both on and off the court were invaluable to the team's success.

As we commemorate the 20th anniversary of this historic achievement, we reflect on the indelible legacy of the 2004 Lake Superior State University Men's Tennis team. Their journey serves as a source of inspiration for current and future Lakers, reminding us of the power of perseverance, teamwork, and the pursuit of excellence in the face of adversity. Here's to celebrating their enduring impact on LSSU athletics and the proud tradition of Laker Tennis.

Reflecting on his time at LSSU, Drew shared, “LSSU grads stand out for their hands-on skills. Companies recognize our practical approach, setting us apart from other schools that focus more on theory.

We're excited to announce that Drew has secured a position as an Automation Engineer at Hyperion Automation! Congratulations, Drew, on your remarkable achievements! Your story is an inspiration, and we can't wait to see where your career takes you next.

Jeremy Goetz, a senior in Political Science at LSSU, who recently presented his insightful senior research at the Midwest Political Science Conference in Chicago on April 5th.

Jeremy's compelling thesis delved into military recruitment during the War on Terror. His research revealed a fascinating insight: while the official recruitment campaigns seldom used the phrase “War on Terror,” the classification of this period as a war significantly boosted funding for military recruitment.

Accompanied by Professor Melissa Shaffer-O'Connell, Jeremy confidently shared his findings, garnering attention and sparking meaningful discussions at the conference.

Congratulations, Jeremy, on your research and presentation!

Artsiom Barshchou epitomizes the essence of balancing athletic prowess with academic excellence. As a standout member of Lake Superior State University's Division I hockey team, Barshchou's journey is a testament to dedication, resilience, and achievement.

Arriving at LSSU with a passion for hockey, Barshchou quickly made his mark, contributing significantly to the team's triumph in clinching the WCHA title during his freshman year. However, his commitment to success extended far beyond the rink.

Recognizing the importance of holistic development, Barshchou actively engaged in academic pursuits and extracurricular activities. Under the guidance of esteemed faculty members like Dr. Ralf Wilhelms, Interim Dean Mindy McCready, Professor Robert Boston, and Professor Marta Diaz, he immersed himself in a rigorous academic curriculum, gaining invaluable knowledge and discipline.

Yet, Barshchou's journey was not solely defined by academic achievements. He embraced extracurricular opportunities, leveraging them to cultivate essential skills such as leadership, teamwork, and networking. Through this multifaceted approach to learning, Barshchou not only excelled in his studies but also emerged as a well-rounded individual poised for success in any endeavor.

Now, equipped with a wealth of knowledge and skills, Barshchou stands at the threshold of his future. As the hockey season draws to a close, he contemplates his next steps, whether it be continuing his athletic career in the NCAA or embarking on a professional path.
