The Centre works collaboratively with 14 partnering groups and organizations to offer families with young children in the Kingston & Area better service coordination, navigation, and support, helping reduce barriers to accessing services and ultimately preventing escalation of need. This grant was made possible by the Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul Community Impact Fund and will introduce more early relational programming, expanding the model to reach more families and develop a collaborative, efficient system with a focus on primary prevention, early intervention and support.

CFKA in the Community: Rural Community Connections Event

On April 17th, the CFKA), the Adverse Childhood Experiences and Resilience Coalition of KFL&A (ARC), Rural Frontenac Community Services, and Kingston Community Health Centres hosted the "Rural Community Connections" event in Verona. The event brought together over 50 participants, a group comprised of rural residents, stakeholders, and agency representatives, who participated in a community discussion about connection and belonging. The enthusiasm in the room was palpable, and spirited discussions found participants of all ages exploring the challenges of isolation, and potential solutions for creating connection and fostering resilience in rural communities.

Alternate Minimum Tax (AMT) Update

The Canadian federal government announced its new budget on April 16, with updates on the new regime for the calculation of AMT. To recap, AMT rules generally apply to individuals and trusts, and tax is calculated under both the ordinary and AMT tax regimes. Whichever regime yields the highest tax result is the one that a taxpayer will pay. Here's what’s new (AMT changes will not apply to corporations):

  • CRA will allow individuals to claim 80% of the charitable donation tax credit, up from the previously proposed 50%, when calculating the AMT. Under the old AMT regime, 100% of charitable donations could be included in adjusted taxable income for AMT purposes.

  • CRA will include 30% of capital gains on the donation of publicly listed securities in the calculation of AMT. Under the regular method of calculating tax, none of the capital gains on donated securities are taxable.

  • The AMT basic exemption is being increased to $173,000, from $40,000.

Speak with a certified specialist to best understand how tax treatment of your charitable donations can be a strategic part of your financial planning.

Andy George

A Heartfelt Tribute: The Andy Endowment Fund

The Andy Endowment Fund's story is one of unwavering community support and compassion. It begins with a beloved son named Andy George, whose life was tragically cut short by leukemia at 8 years old. Inspired by his legacy, a dedicated group of friends and parents launched “The Andy Fund”. Their mission: raise funds for leukemia research and local cancer projects.

Spotlight: Fostering Growth and Connection in Our Community

CFKA is proud to support projects that foster connections and community. Here are two stories that highlight this theme:

Caring for Those Who Serve

While there has been some form of garrison presence in Kingston since the 1670s, the direct antecedent to CFB Kingston was Camp Barriefield (now McNaughton Barracks), established during WW1. Today, CFB Kingston has close to 8,000 military and civilian personnel and is a unique part of Kingston’s community fabric.

The demands of military life, however, including multiple relocations, frequent absences, deployments, and unpredictable work hours are typical sources of stress for military families that can affect their well-being. In addition, the financial health of Canadian military families continues to be on the decline.

To help Kingston military families in crisis, CFKA provided a $16,150 grant to “Operation Emergency Fund”, led by Together We Stand Military Family Foundation. This Fund addresses the needs of emergency housing, mental health services, emergency childcare, and food security, ensuring that funding is distributed within 72 hours of receiving the request and the confidentiality of the family in need. It’s easing financial strain, allowing them to focus on supporting those who proudly serve and the ones who stand beside them.

Caring for an Island Community

The Amherst Island Community Medical Clinic (AICMC) is part health centre and part community centre. Over 25% of senior residents on the island have no medical assistance. With a commitment to older adults’ health, the clinic hosts wellness clinics, where residents find both care and connection.

Partnering with Lennox and Addington Paramedicine, the clinic offers other essential services: blood labs, blood pressure checks, and glucose monitoring. Vaccination clinics hum with purpose, safeguarding the island against preventable diseases. The Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) ensures that frozen meals reach community members’ doorsteps. And when foot care becomes a need, a dedicated professional steps in, tending to weary soles.

AICMC is an entirely volunteer-run organization. The AICMC aims to have a nurse practitioner or doctor available at least once a week for residents without a primary care physician. CFKA was proud to be able to support AICMC recently through a grant from The Amherst Island Fund.

Let's do more, together.

While CFKA has been able to support many outstanding agencies throughout the Kingston area for decades, there's always more we can do together to address critical community issues and urgent and emerging needs.

CFKA is where your compassion meets purpose.
