We are quickly nearing the end of April, and after one more cold snap this week hopefully warmer weather is here to stay. Activity in the fields has picked up the last week or two and will be in full swing very soon. I just recently got wind of an anhydrous tank roll over very early in the morning earlier in the week. In the urgency of the busy season, it's easy to make mistakes that can be dangerous. Take some time to slow down and be cautious, it might save a life. I have included below a fact sheet on safe handling of anhydrous ammonia, which would be a good review for even the experienced operator.
Earth Day was this past Monday, and Governor Dewine took the opportunity to announce that the H2Ohio program will be expanding to include the whole state, not just the Lake Erie watershed. This program incentivizes science-based, proven best management practices to prevent nutrient runoff and improve water quality. Enrollment in this program is open now through May 6th, producers can sign up at the Champaign County Soil and Water Conservation office. There is only 17,000 acres allotted to Champaign County, so interested parties should not wait to sign up. I have included an article with more information below. Or call the CCSWCD at 937-484-5527.
The Champaign County Master Gardeners are planning to hold their spring Make it Take it event on May 2nd at 6:30 pm in the Champaign County Community Center auditorium. The cost is $25 per person and the activity will be a teacup succulent garden. This would make a great mother's day gift, or better yet bring her to the class! Please register here: https://go.osu.edu/makeit.
Finally, we are proud to be participating in the ODA Victory Garden program this year. We have complementary garden starter packets available in our office. Each packet includes a small amount of sunflower, cucumber, carrot, and lettuce seeds. These are provided by the Ohio Department of Agriculture and are free to anyone that would like to grow a garden. They are available in our office during regular business hours.
