Finding a film canister in my basement recently, I’m reflecting on ancient days of yore when I’d buy 35mm Kodak film. Between the expense of the purchase and the cost to develop it, I was deliberate and thoughtful about what pictures I snapped.
Fast forward to today with an iPhone in every pocket when everything is digitally captured: our selfies on our daily jogs, recording our kid’s school programs, or capturing yet another cute picture of Fido. Crowds of onlookers at rock concerts, celebrity events, or political rallies all have their phones out trying to capture that perfect moment. Between the ease and availability, the default is looking through the phone rather than taking in the life experience. I’m guilty of it too, but that film canister reminds me that there are moments to deliberate, to pause, to take it all in.
We’re in a similar moment here at KHRC. Our programs, partnerships, and impact have hit new heights across the state. New properties are opening in communities that haven’t seen housing development in generations: homes unlocked, neighborhoods revitalized, communities reestablished, and lives touched.
In the hustle and bustle of defending programs and resources at the Statehouse and Washington these last months, it’s easy to be distracted and miss out on the historic success KHRC and our partners have had these past few years. An empty film canister reminds me to savor the here and now and take in the full scene. The picture is lovely, a snapshot of Home.
