On Friday, April 25, at the White Hart, EXTRAS will host their first Gala Benefit evening. EXTRAS, a 501c3 not-for-profit organization, whose mission is to provide quality care after school and on school breaks and half days - hence the name: Extended Time for Recreational Activities in Salisbury (“EXTRAS”).
EXTRAS plays a critical role in the community to provide a supportive, nurturing and affordable place for our children, especially for working families. However, EXTRAS cannot survive on tuition alone. Due to the fact that EXTRAS strives to meet the needs of the community and remain affordable, it is critical that outside fundraising meet the gap.
At the Gala, all proceeds of sponsorship, ticket sales, silent auction, live auction and raffle will go to EXTRAS. There will be food, drink, and entertainment.
Purchase tickets to the gala here: https://extras.betterworld.org/events/extrasgala
Sponsor the gala here: https://extras.betterworld.org/campaigns/sponsorship-gala

Body & Soul: Cavalieri’s Rappresentatione – A Turning Point in Music
- Sat., May 10, 2025 at 6 pm Trinity Church, Lakeville, CT
- Sun., May 11, 2025 at 4 pm Saint James Place, Great Barrington, MA
Roman composer Emilio Cavalieri wrote and premiered his groundbreaking work Rappresentatione di Anima et di Corpo with great success in 1600. It is the first dramatic stage work fully set to music. The question remains, whether this work is considered an opera or an oratorio (sacred drama)!
The subject, an allegorical drama, is a lively debate over worldly vanities versus a spiritual life. It features nine opposing characters: Soul, Body, Counsel, Intellect, Time, Pleasure, Guardian Angel, World, Worldly Life, and a chorus that comments on the action, accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Solos, duets, ensemble pieces and instrumental interludes alternate to create a varied dramatic and entertaining representation of the plot.

FOOD WASTE PREVENTION WEEK: APRIL 7th-13th
TRAC and the Salisbury/Sharon Transfer Station are proud to support Food Waste Prevention Week, joining more than 700 partners across the country in a week-long online and in-person awareness campaign to inspire changes in our habits that will reduce the amount of food that goes to waste in our home refrigerators, at work, and in our communities.
Close to 40% of all the food produced in the United States goes uneaten, and most of the wasted food comes from home refrigerators and pantries. So even if you dutifully compost kitchen scraps, it is the food that is spoiling in your refrigerator that could have become part of a meal that defines “wasted food”. There are lots of great resources from which you can learn how to optimize the storage of groceries; A family of four can save between $1866-$3000 per year by reducing wasted food. Check out the web pages at https://savethefood.com/ and https://www.foodwastepreventionweek.com
Contact Barbara Bettigole at foodwastepilot@gmail.com if you have ideas for activities or questions. Already, the two town libraries, the Hotchkiss Farm, and some area schools are planning April events to promote awareness of wasted food, some in conjunction with Earth Day activities.

TIP OF THE MONTH:
When considering what plastics can go into the recycling hopper (or bin) and which should go into the garbage hopper (or bin), here’s an easy way to think about it:
YES, if it is a container (clamshell, tub, jar, jug) that held:
- SOMETHING YOU ATE
- SOMETHING YOU PUT ON YOUR BODY
- SOMETHING YOU USED TO WASH DISHES OR LAUNDRY
NO, if it is black plastic, soft plastic, hard-rigid plastic, and unusually-shaped plastic (like the plastic encasing new windshield wipers.)
For further information, go to RecycleCT.com “What’s In & What’s Out”.
