Dr. Ramo promoted to Assistant Chief of Staff at Scottish Rite
UT Southwestern Orthopaedic Surgery Professor and Scottish Rite for Children faculty, Brandon A. Ramo, M.D., has been promoted to Assistant Chief of Staff for Scottish Rite.
Dr. Ramo will continue to serve as the Chief Quality Officer, a post he has held since 2020. He will also continue his clinical and research work with his focus on Early Onset Scoliosis and make an impact as Professor for our department.
Congratulations Dr. Ramo on this well deserved promotion!

UTSW Orthopaedic Surgery at TOA 2025 Leadership Conference
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery attended the Texas Orthopaedic Association 2025 Leadership Conference last month!
We had two of our residents, Angela Zhang, M.D. and Rohit Thota, M.D. participate in the Resident Skills competition. Dr. Zhang also presented a case presentation on Friday, and Antonia Chen, M.D. moderated the Department Chair panel that happened on Friday.

Dr. Ellis visits Brazil to serve as instructor at Pediatric Sports Medicine course
UT Southwestern Orthopaedic Surgery Professor, and Scottish Rite faculty member, Henry Ellis, M.D., served as an instructor at a Pediatric Sports Medicine course in Brazil.
Dr. Ellis shared his expertise to current and future pediatric sports medicine surgeons from across South America as they convened for hands-on learning, engaging case discussions and valuable collaborations.

Dr. Liu leads successful ACFAS 2025 Annual Scientific Conference in Phoenix
Last month, UTSW Orthopaedic Surgery's George Liu, D.P.M., Michael VanPelt, D.P.M., and Katherine Raspovic, D.P.M., attended the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons Scientific Conference held in Phoenix, AZ.
As ACFAS president, Dr. Liu ran an incredibly successful meeting with over 2,240 attendees, which is the largest meeting yet for the organization. He as well as Drs. VanPelt and Raspovic had multiple presentations during the meeting.
It was a wonderful conference, and we can't wait for next year's meeting.

Dr. Samade presents co-authored poster with UTSW Plastic Surgery at IFSSH Triennial Congress
UT Southwestern Orthoapedic Surgery's Richard Samade, M.D., Ph.D., joined UTSW Plastic Surgeons Associate Professor, Jennifer Kargel, M.D., to present at 2025 IFSSH Triennial Congress. This event is hosted by the Hand Society.
Drs. Samade and Kargel supported medical student Daniel Villareal Acha as he presented Adult and Pediatric Trigger Finger: An Updated Literature Review" and "Outcomes Following Distal Upper Extremity Fractures in Chronic Kidney Disease."
It is great to see collaboration in research between our department and The Department of Plastic Surgery.

SRS/IMAST 2025 Annual Meeting Highlights
UT Southwestern Orthopaedic Surgery Professors and Scottish Rite Faculty, Jaysson Brooks, M.D. and Megan Johnson, M.D., attended this year's SRS/IMAST 2025 Annual Meeting in Glasgow, Scotland.
The team presented five presentations throughout the weekend on the topic of children with scoliosis, including a presentation on Scottish Rite's development of a cloud-based remote monitoring system for halo gravity traction to improve patient care, alongside a study evaluating the impact of nighttime vs. full-time bracing, compliance and curve progression.

Drs. Hernandez and Ulman give lectures at Women's Health Research Initiative Spring Forum
UT Southwestern Orthopaedic Surgery researcher, Paula Hernandez, Ph.D. presented at the UT Southwestern Women's Health Research Initiative Spring Forum that was hosted by the Cecil H. and Idea Green Center for Reproductive Biology Sciences.
Dr. Hernandez gave a talk focusing on her team's proposed theory that the intrinsic mechanobiology of chondrocytes (cartilage cells) contributes to the sex-specific risks of osteoarthritis. She presented on what was previously found in her lab and what now her team is detecting.
| | Also in attendance to present was UT Southwestern Orthopaedic Surgery Assistant Professor, Sophia Ulman, Ph.D., from Scottish Rite. She talked about the groundbreaking work on ACL injury risk in adolescent female soccer players across the menstrual cycle. Findings from run-cut tasks and soccer kicks revealed significantly elevated ACL injury risk factors during menstruation. This research, conducted at the Movement Science Lab at Scottish Rite for Children in Frisco, TX, is the first to biomechanically evaluate these risks in adolescent athletes. Implementing Three-Dimensional Printed Pelvises with Idealized Acetabular Fractures to Improve Resident Education
UT Southwestern Orthopaedic Surgery Associate Professor, Alexandra Callan, M.D., and Assistant Professors, Richard Samade, M.D., Ph.D., and Robert Weinschenk, M.D., were authors on this new study published online in the Journal of Clinical Orthopaedics and Trauma. Orthopaedic Surgery Resident, Angel Valencia, M.D. was also an author on this study.
The study aims to evaluate the value of cost-effective generic 3D printed models to improve resident performance on classifying real patient acetabular fracture examples.

Dr. Gary's guest lecture at Chief's Conference
Early this month, the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery had a chief's conference featuring guest lecturer, Joshua Gary, M.D., from Keck Medicine of USC where he is Chief of Orthopaedic Trauma Services.
Dr. Gary spoke and presented to our resident and faculty about the lessons learned in Orthopaedic Trauma. It was very insightful and we thank Dr. Gary for coming and visiting us at UT Southwestern.

Dr. Bauer's Grand Rounds lecture on surgeon leadership
Last week, we had the pleasure of having a guest lecture from Brent Bauer, M.D. for our Grand Rounds. He is the Medical Director and Chair of Orthopedics at University of Maryland Medical System.
Dr. Bauer talked about the moral imperative of surgeon leadership, and the call to actions in the profession. It was a very inspiring talk for our residents and faculty.
