President's Message

Members, Supporters, and Friends of the Branch,

As we welcome the arrival of spring, we also observe Fair Housing Month—a timely moment to reflect on the complex history of housing in Fairfax County.

Black homeownership is vital to closing the racial wealth gap and fostering equitable community growth. Yet for generations, discriminatory practices like racial covenants and redlining prevented Black families from building generational wealth through property ownership. Increasing Black homeownership not only enhances individual financial stability but also strengthens community engagement and economic health—both essential for building a truly inclusive Fairfax County.

Historically, Black families owned land in Fairfax County dating back to the post-Civil War era. However, as suburban development expanded, racial covenants were introduced, barring Black home purchases. Even after these practices were outlawed, discrimination in mortgage lending and real estate continued, contributing to today’s wealth disparities. These disparities remain evident in both homeownership rates and property values.

While progress has been made through fair housing laws, lending programs, and advocacy efforts, significant challenges remain. Fair housing is not just a policy—it's an ongoing commitment to justice and opportunity.

In response, the Fairfax County NAACP is hosting a Black Homeownership Forum, where experts will discuss the historical context, current conditions, and affordable homeownership opportunities. Understanding our history is a crucial step toward building a more equitable future—one where every resident has the opportunity to thrive.

We invite you to join us at this important forum. More information can be found below. Let’s work together to make fair housing a reality for all Fairfax County residents.

We continue to need YOUR engagement and involvement in EVERY advocacy effort. Please join or renew your membership today. Several of our committees are in need of volunteers. If you're a member and you haven't joined a committee yet, please sign up today and make a difference!

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to justice.

Together In Service,

Niki Zimmerman

Proud President, Fairfax County NAACP

Fairfax NAACP April General Membership Meeting – The State of Fair Housing

April is Housing Month, and as we confront critical challenges in fair housing, we are honored to welcome Susie McClannahan, Fair Housing Director at the Equal Rights Center (ERC), as our guest speaker for our General Membership Meeting on Tuesday, April 22.

Tuesday, April 22, 2025

Via Zoom

With the new administration, fair housing protections are facing serious challenges. Federal grants that support nonprofit fair housing initiatives are being eliminated, and HUD’s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity is facing a drastic 75% staff reduction. These changes could have lasting consequences for communities across the country—including here in Fairfax County.

Join us as Susie McClannahan breaks down the current landscape of fair housing, what these policy shifts mean for our community, and how we can take action to protect and advance housing equity in our region. This is a discussion you won’t want to miss!

Event Highlights Recap

March Event Highlights

Our branch continued its momentum in March with impactful events that brought our community together in the fight for justice and equality.

We had the privilege of hosting a powerful discussion with Carolyn Williamson Green, Rosa Parks' cousin and caretaker, and her granddaughter, Jasmine Carr, Fairfax NAACP Membership Committee Co-Chair. Their firsthand accounts of Rosa Parks' life and legacy were a profound reminder of the ongoing fight for civil rights and the importance of carrying her mission forward.

Member Spotlight

Welcome to our Member Spotlight! Each month, we’ll be shining a light on one of our amazing members who embodies the spirit of our community.

Neera Datta

Neera Datta is an outstanding member of the Housing Committee, advocating for tenants' rights and increased funding for affordable housing. This year, she is organizing a team to testify as a block in support of affordable housing during the April county public hearings on the FY26 budget. While funding is expected to increase slightly, it still falls short of what’s needed to meet the goals set by the county supervisors.

A Fairfax County resident for over 25 years, Neera spent several years in the mortgage banking industry. Having experienced both food and housing insecurity firsthand—as a tenant and a landlord—she deeply understands the challenges many face. Grateful for the support she once received when she was just a penny away from homelessness, she is committed to paying it forward. Neera believes that if she can help even one person access the resources they need to keep a roof over their head and food on their table, she has made a meaningful difference in Fairfax County.
