Angela Denker, author of Disciples of White Jesus: The Radicalization of American Boyhood. This discussion will examine how contemporary constructions of masculinity in the U.S. are radicalizing religious patriarchy, and what men and women can do in response in order to develop communities who value gender equity.

Executive Director, Meredith Stone, will also provide an update on BWIM’s work to support women in ministry and leadership and advocate for their full affirmation in Baptist life.

What We Are Reading

This month, I have the honor of reading The Three Mothers by Anna Malaika Tubbs. The Three Mothers is explores the lives of Alberta King, Louise Little, and Berdis Baldwin—the mothers of Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin. Tubbs shares the empowering and sometimes daunting stories of these women, as individuals and mothers to boys who would become social justice activists driven by their own faith and lived experiences. Their journey to and through motherhood was a revolutionary work worthy to be deemed an act of ministry.

In anticipation of Mother’s Day and having recently returned from parental leave, I am aware of the intricate dynamics of work-life balance for women in ministry who are mothering.

It is noteworthy that for many Baptist women in ministry in our communities, maternal influence often nurtures and guides the direction of their spiritual leadership in church and at home. BWIM’s mission to support women pursuing ministry and leadership rings true for me through Tubbs’ work because she highlights the often-unrecognized roles women play in raising up faithful leaders, resilient teachers, and emboldened activists.

BWIM's commitment to gender equity in ministry is an underlying refrain for me as I go through this book, because as these women led, they raised men who would change the world. In my estimation, the most well-known narratives of their son’s lives rarely highlight these women or others as worthy collaborators in the Civil Rights movement. What does it mean for all of us to acknowledge the role of the unnamed women who sacrificed and built the foundations for so many of us to lead and believe? I believe it would help turn the tide in how our collective faith narratives are told, even at the scriptural level, let alone the societal.

I hope everyone can take the time to read this book and reflect on the faith of the women who came before them, maternal or otherwise, and its impact on how we lead and believe today.
