Jewish Artists and Genesis:

Part IV - Genesis 12-22

The holiday of Passover is based on the story of the Exodus of the Jews from Egypt. The name ‘PASSOVER’ comes from the ‘Passing over’ of the homes of the Jews during the 10th plague, the death of the firstborn. Passover is observed at a celebration called a Seder (which means “order”). The Art of Passover tells the story of this holiday using art objects as visual resources for learning and understanding.

The Art of Israel surveys the history of the land through art objects. It begins with the building of King Solomon’s Temple and continues with the Jewish catacombs, the synagogue mosaics, and the establishment of the modern State of Israel. This program follows the sweep of Israeli history while focusing on the visual arts and artists of recent centuries. The Art of Israel highlights this most important country and its artworks.

Jewish Artists and Genesis surveys Jewish artists and their responses to Biblical citations in the book of Genesis. From the Medieval period forward, artists have used a variety of media (illuminations, prints, sculpture, etc.) and aesthetic approaches to express their artistic creativity.

The drama of conflict of this piece has a modern resonance. It does so as a historical and contemporary fact. It has allusions to the foundations of Judaism and Islam.

Segal’s dramas have the cutting edge of moral authority. He stresses the psychological aspect in contrast to the dramatic physical, and interrupted moment. Segal probed the thin line where art and reality meet. There is a seriousness about his work. He is preoccupied with humans. His art concerns the common man. Segal was a significant artistic force in the 1960s. He expresses social convictions through Jewish religious tradition.

From Our Audience

Jewish Artists and Genesis

These programs are so eye-opening. I know of some of these artists (Chagall, Levine) but your programs explore them in more depth. Your knowledge is extensive. What a mitzvah!

I am glad you are coming back next month. That gives us something to look forward to.

You always do a superb job!

This was my first program and I wasn't sure what to expect. I stayed awake for the entire presentation, indicating that it kept my interest and I enjoyed it very much!

Fascinating!
