Cafe News . . .
PALNV was able to save 46 cats from the streets during the month of March! We had 350 appointments in the cafe and 31 cats found their forever homes! There are currently 17 cats and 9 kittens in the cafe and 30 cats/kittens in foster homes.
It's been a busy few months in the cafe! Keep an eye out for updates on social media - we have multiple mama cats in foster care and lots of cute kittens on the way. We've also taken in several rescue cats who need medical attention and we're dealing with some vet expenses. Donations are always appreciated!

Pet First Aid Awareness Month
April is Pet First Aid Awareness Month! Our cats are cherished members of our families, and just like with any family member, it’s crucial to know how to respond in case of an emergency.
The first step in being prepared to administer pet first aid is recognizing signs of distress. While cats are notorious for hiding signs of illness or injury, there are still some common indicators that may suggest your feline friend needs immediate attention: difficulty breathing, excessive drooling, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, lethargy or weakness, bleeding, pale gums or unresponsiveness.
Once you’ve recognized that your cat may be in distress, you can administer basic first aid while seeking professional veterinary care. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Assess the Situation
- Stay Calm
- Handle with Care
- Control Bleeding
- Address Breathing Difficulties
- Transport Safely
Also, being prepared with a well-stocked pet first aid kit is essential. Your kit should include items such as: bandages, gauze pads, adhesive tape, scissors, tweezers, antiseptic wipes, hydrogen peroxide (for inducing vomiting, only under veterinary guidance), your veterinarian’s contact information and any medications your cat may require.
While knowing how to administer basic first aid can be invaluable in emergencies, it’s essential to remember that it’s not a substitute for professional veterinary care. Always seek the guidance of a veterinarian for any health concerns or emergencies your cat may experience.

Cats and Sneezing
Does your cat sneeze? Sneezing is a reflex that serves to clean the nasal cavity. Cat sneezes usually fall into two categories (1) non-infectious and (2) infectious although older cats, with certain health problems such as tumors, may also sneeze regularly.
(1) Non-infectious origins - A cat could sneeze for non-infectious reasons. This is the case, for example, when the cat is allergic to something like pollen, dust, or a certain type of food. It is also the case when something is blocked in their nose. When they sneeze for this reason, it is to remove the elements that are bothering them and cleaning the nasal cavity.
(2) Infectious origins - A cat might also sneeze because of an infection. For example, they might sneeze because of a fungus, bacteria, or a virus. These infections can be transmitted between cats by the small droplets that come out of their mouth when they sneeze.
Symptoms to keep an eye on:
- When a cat has an allergy, it may develop symptoms such as a runny nose, watery eyes, or coughing.
- If your cat has a tumor, nasal bleeding may occur, most often on one side of the nose.
- If it is caused by an infection cause, you may see a purulent discharge from both nostrils.
- Other symptoms such as fatigue, coughing, a cold, shortness of breath, a fever, loss of appetite, and red eyes may occur.
Whether it be because of an allergy, bacterial infection, or viral infection, it is important to consult a veterinarian to determine the true cause of your cat's sneezing and to establish an appropriate diagnosis.

INTERESTING CAT FACT #5 - A cat can’t climb head first down a tree because every claw on a cat’s paw points the same way. To get down from a tree, a cat must back down.*
