Happy April, Friends!
Every April, we celebrate National Library Week
Sunday, April 6 - Saturday, April 12
As we get ready to kick off National Library Week, I want to take a moment to reflect on the importance of our libraries and the crucial role we play in the fabric of our community. The library is not just a building filled with books; it is a vibrant hub of learning, culture, and connection for people of all ages and backgrounds. Every day, we provide essential services beyond reading—offering programs, events, and resources supporting personal growth, lifelong learning, and community engagement.
Why Does the Library Matter?
-
We Provide Access to Information: Public libraries offer free access to a wide range of information and resources, from books and digital media to research databases and community programs. In a world where information can be a barrier due to costs, libraries serve as equalizers, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow, and connect.
-
We Promote Life Long Learning: Libraries provide lifelong learning opportunities. Whether it’s a child discovering the magic of reading, an adult learning a new skill, or a senior attending a health seminar, libraries serve as spaces for personal enrichment and development.
-
We Encourage Community Connection: Libraries are gathering places where people come together to learn, share ideas, and participate in community events. From book clubs to author talks, educational workshops to art exhibits, libraries create opportunities for connection and collaboration.
-
We Support Education: Libraries play a key role in supporting formal education. Students, teachers, and parents rely on libraries for homework help, research resources, and educational programs that supplement classroom learning.
How Can You Celebrate National Library Week?
-
Visit the Library: Explore the vast array of books, digital resources, and community programs available.
-
Tell us what you love about the library: Send a note of thanks to your local librarians and library staff.
-
Attend a library program: We have programming every day for patrons of all ages!
-
Spread the Word: Share your favorite library experiences on social media using #NationalLibraryWeek.
As we celebrate National Library Week, let’s recognize and support this essential institution that serves as the heartbeat of our community. Whether you’re borrowing a book, attending a program, or simply finding a quiet place to think, the Lower Providence Library offers something invaluable:
a place where everyone belongs.
The Lower Providence Library depends on local, state, and federal funding to continue providing these services, and we need your help. The state’s budget proposes flat-funds for public libraries this year, which means no additional support despite growing needs. Pennsylvania Public Libraries are asking for an increase of $6.2 million, which amounts to just $1.55 per library cardholder in Pennsylvania. Please reach out to your elected state officials and express your support for increasing funding for public libraries. Your voice can make a difference.
Libraries build communities, but we need your support to continue our mission. Thank you for standing with us.
Happy reading, and see you at the library!
