AB: Monitoring and Preparing for Overland Flooding

On May 5, 2025, the AER reminded operators on the flooding risk increases in May and June due to precipitation and snowmelt. Licensees should be aware of the potential for site and equipment damage from flooding and be prepared to physically inspect and assess any sites and equipment that have or may potentially be affected.

Additional information can be found: Bulletin 2025-16

AB: Water Use, Management, and Conservation

As summer approaches, the AER reminded that the Water Conservation Policy for Upstream Oil and Gas Operations emphasizes the use of alternative water sources, including alternative nonsaline water (e.g., industrial wastewater, water from tailings ponds), over high-quality nonsaline water (e.g., lake or river water or fresh groundwater). Reducing reliance on high-quality nonsaline water supports long-term conservation efforts.

Before diverting water, licensees should review their licence conditions to ensure compliance with diversion restrictions. Inspections and audits are conducted to ensure licensees adhere to conditions of the license. All licences can be viewed on the AEPA Approvals Authorization viewer.
