Sturgis Seed Library is Open!

The Sturgis Seed Library has recently been restocked. Patrons are invited to come browse our selection of seeds and choose up to 4 varieties to check out at the circulation desk. Selections include vegetables, fruit, flowers, and herbs.

Once you make your seed selection, bring your seed packs to the Circulation Desk for checkout. This helps us keep track of how many seeds have been shared. You do not need to have a library card to check out seeds.

Also, we accept donations of seeds that you have saved from your garden or packets that are dated within the last year. You can drop seed donations at the Circulation Desk -- please do not put them in the Seed Library drawers.

Stop by and start gardening!

Special News

New in the Archives

Five new collections have recently been cataloged and added to the Sturgis Library Archives. These materials are available to researchers to use in the Library. If you would like to know more about any of our collections, contact Lucy Loomis at (508) 362-6636 or director@sturgislibrary.org. Click on the links below to see full descriptions of the collections.

George Lyman Kittredge, was a noted Harvard professor, author, and Shakespeare scholar. He spent summers at his home on Railroad Avenue. His daughter Frances married Conrad Wesselhoeft, and the collection includes extensive information on the Wesselhoeft family in addition to the Kittredge family. George's son Henry was a schoolmaster and an author who wrote a number of books and articles on Cape Cod. Our Kittredge Room is named for Henry, and houses his large collection of maritime books. Our first archival collection, MS. 1., is the Henry Crocker Kittredge Collection, which includes his personal and research papers.

Do you have historic Cape Cod documents, family papers, photographs, letters, ship logs, deeds, or other research material? Consider donating them to the Sturgis Library Archives. They will be stored in acid-free folder and boxes, and fully cataloged for access through our website and the CLAMS catalog.

April Art Exhibits

Tim Johnson's Butter DIshes

Tim Johnson lives in West Barnstable where he crafts with clay and paint in his garage studio. His latest project has been crafting the butter dishes which will be on display at the Library during the month of April.

Now retired from teaching, Tim taught kindergarten for many years at the Barnstable West-Barnstable Elementary School. He also held the post of Children’s Librarian at Sturgis Library for one year, and is sometimes our special guest at Storytime!

Show Us Your Garden!

We are planning our 2026 and 2027 garden tours as part of the Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival, and are looking for a few more nice gardens to be on our tour.

Each year we partner with homeowners who allow the public to tour their gardens. There is a $5 admission fee per garden, and proceeds benefit Sturgis Library. We provide volunteers to take admission and assist with parking if needed. The homeowner can choose to mix and mingle with visitors or leave it to the volunteers.

This year the tours will take place on Saturday, July 11th from 10am to 4pm.

Gardens don't have to have hydrangeas! We have showcased a number of varied gardens over the years including perennial gardens, pollinator gardens, lush vegetable gardens, marsh-side gardens, gardens with a view, children's gardens, and others.

If interested, or for more information, contact Lucy Loomis at 508-362-6636 or director@sturgislibrary.org.

BookPage and bookmarks

As some of you know, we recently cancelled our subscription to the monthly publication BookPage due to the increased cost of providing takeaway copies to the public.

While we can no longer provide copies for you to take home and keep, we will be subscribing to the monthly issue just like we do other magazines. That way you can still read BookPage at the Library or check out an issue to take home and return. The first issue of our new subscription will be available in May.

We also carry bookmarks: a magazine for book lovers who haven't read everything. This monthly publication summarizes hundreds of reviews of new, notable, and classic books, and shines a light on great books that you may have missed.

You can browse current and back issues of all of our magazine subscriptions in the Lowell Room.
