Pride of the Valley

Dear Parents and Families of Steubenville High School,

I hope everyone is well as we approach Spring Break. With April upon us, I wanted to take a moment to provide you with some important updates and reminders:

Before discussing the calendar shift to spring, I want to congratulate all winter sports athletes on historically great seasons. Our girls’ basketball team had the all-time winningest season in SHS history with a record of 23-2. Likewise, our boys’ basketball team went on a historic run, becoming the winningest boys team in school history (26-2) on their way to state runners-up in Division 3. Our boys wrestling team had another successful season that included two state placers – Beau Hudson (8th) and Cooper Smith (3rd). On the girls’ side, Jahmiah-el Bey and Talea Guntrum both qualified for the state tournament. Talea Guntrum was thoroughly dominant, pinning her way through the state tournament to secure her third straight state championship! Congrats Talea!

Spring sports season is underway at Big Red and we are excited to welcome three new head coaches. Jacob Hudson will lead our track and field program this year. April Minniefield takes the reins of softball. And Justin Banks follows his high school coach and mentor Fred Heatherington, in ascending to the head spot with the boys. Coach Ross Ivkovich and his tennis squad are working hard and improving with every set. I very much hope Big Red Nation has a chance to get out and support these programs as we look to seize the momentum and replicate the excitement from winter sports. Best of luck to all spring sport student-athletes and coaches!

End of Course (EOC) Exams: We are already well into the ELA component of our state tests. Preparation for the state EOC exams is in full swing. Testing for ELA continues after Spring Break, with Math, Social Studies and Science following later in April. We will operate on a 2-hour delay schedule from April 20 through April 27, with classes starting at 10 a.m after testing has concluded. We ask parents to encourage your child to get ample rest and have a nutritious breakfast on the days they test.

Academic Assembly: Our Academic Assembly is scheduled for Friday, April 17th, at 1 p.m. Students are encouraged to attend as we celebrate academic excellence at Big Red. Invitations will soon be in the mail for parents of students being recognized at the event. Be sure to mark your calendars now.

Finish Strong: Together, let’s approach the remainder of the school year with purpose, positivity and a shared commitment to excellence. Finish strong, maximize each moment, and take full advantage of every opportunity these final weeks have to offer.

Progress Monitoring: Stay involved in your child's academic journey by regularly checking their grades on Progress Book. If you need assistance accessing this platform, please get in touch with Ms. Olesky at karen.olesky@rollred.org.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to email me at aaron.newman@rollred.org or call me at (740) 282-9741 ext. 1105.

Wishing everyone a successful and rewarding Spring. Thank you for your unwavering support, and as always...Roll Red!

Sincerely,

Mr. Newman
