Celebrating 40 Years of Main Street in Downtown Burlington
Forty years is a significant milestone. In 1986, a group of community leaders made a decision that would shape the future of Burlington. They believed downtown was worth investing in, worth preserving, and worth building upon. With that vision, Downtown Partners, Inc. was formed, creating a foundation for intentional growth and revitalization.
Today, that vision is evident throughout the district. From façade improvements and building renovations to Main Street Iowa Challenge Grants and Open 4 Business awards, the progress seen in downtown has been made possible through strong partnerships with the State of Iowa, the City of Burlington, and the continued commitment of local businesses, property owners and the community.
Downtown Burlington has faced its share of challenges over the years, including fires, floods, economic shifts, and a global pandemic. Through each of these moments, the district has remained resilient and continues to move forward with strength and purpose.
A key moment in this progress came in 2017 with the City of Burlington securing a $17 million federal TIGER grant. This investment transformed the riverfront and downtown infrastructure, sparking additional private development and reinforcing confidence in the future of the district.
What makes this 40-year milestone meaningful is not a single project, but the sustained commitment behind it. Generations of board members, business owners, city leaders, and volunteers have invested their time and energy into downtown because they understand that when downtown succeeds, the entire community benefits.
This milestone is not only about the last 40 years, but about the future ahead and the continued commitment to strengthening Downtown Burlington.
Cheers to 40 years of revitalization and community investment.
