NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER

Since 1952, all US presidents have proclaimed the first Thursday of May to be a National Day of Prayer. All are invited to the 75th celebration of the National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 7, 2026 at 6:00pm next to the War Memorials at the Salisbury Town Hall. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held across the street in the Congregational Church. Members of the town will offer prayers for government, schools, businesses, arts/media, churches, families, military/veterans, as well as fire, police, and emergency responders. Come join your fellow townspeople at this community event.

TRAC TALK

THE SALISBURY/SHARON WEBSITE

Last month, TRAC TALK opened with tips for staying informed about the Transfer Station. With Earth Day events coming soon I suggest you consider checking out the website’s RESOURCE drop-down menu (found at the far right of the top horizontal tabs) which features video, website, and PDF links to learn about home composting, how recyclables are processed at Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), lesson plans for teachers, as well as a page called Local Champions. We would welcome new suggestions of efforts by residents and businesses which go beyond just recycling right to include in the Local Champions page. You can contact bbettigole@yahoo.com to share a new story (with photographs if possible).

There are a few links to various sources attached below.

If you look through the Transfer Station website, you will also find information that will make your trips more efficient. For instance, if you scroll down to the bottom of the home page, you will find Hours of Operation. Most residents know that the station is open on Sundays only between 9:00 and 1:00. It might surprise many people that Sunday hours of operation only allow for disposal of GARBAGE and RECYCLING – in deference to neighbors who deserve a day without the noise of C&D and Metal disposal.

Here is a link to the Salisbury/Sharon Transfer Station website: https://www.salisburysharontransferstation.com/

DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS

Ask questions of Transfer Station staff (Matt, Jason, George, Gary). They can answer most of your questions. For in- depth answers you might want to talk to the Manager, Brian Bartram. He has a brain full of experience in the field of waste management.

Use the Call Box to the right of the Office door to contact someone in the office.

JOIN THE RESIDENTIAL FOOD WASTE PROGRAM

In May of 2021, the Transfer Station launched a food-waste drop off program for residents of Salisbury and Sharon. A few restaurants took part, but Le Gamin is the only one still getting food waste to the bins at the Transfer Station (averaging about 100 lbs. per week). Sweet Williams has begun separating coffee grounds to be taken to the drop off site.

Today, there are over 500 households participating in the program. The feedback is overwhelmingly positive. Participants talk about how little garbage they generate and how good it feels to be doing the right thing—taking wet, heavy food waste out of the garbage stream and sending it to a commercial composting facility.

To join or learn more about the program, email: foodwastepilot@gmail.com

SWAP SHOP STORIES

Sadly, I did not have my camera on the day I came upon a piano left near the Swap Shop door. (OK, big items should not be left outside the Swap Shop, but let’s put that aside for now.) Two musical brothers thought it might help the piano’s fate if people heard that it is was in good shape. So, one of the brothers went inside the Swap Shop and returned with a tall metal planter that he turned upside down to use as a seat. Soon, a crowd gathered around him as he played a Billy Joel song and then another. People came from inside the Swap Shop and from the parking lot. Everyone was smiling, and some singing along. Share your stories by emailing bbettigole@yahoo.com
