One part of my job that I truly enjoy is helping school leaders navigate policy and regulation related to state and federal programs. Often, these questions center around special education. It is in that vein that we decided to offer a one-day Summer Special Education Summit on June 5.
This is a topic near and dear to my heart, as I believe that serving all types of learners is central to the mission of most of our schools. All of God’s children are made in His image and likeness. But the desire to serve these students is only the first step. Non-public schools face many barriers to providing appropriate services to students with identified needs. Understanding available funding streams, identifying service providers, navigating Child Find, and consulting with LEAs are all challenges in developing effective service plans. Then comes the ongoing work of implementing appropriate accommodations to best serve each student.
As we have developed the program, we have intentionally selected session topics to help administrators and teachers overcome these barriers. Presenters include higher education experts with a passion for supporting non-public schools, our friends from ADAC, as well as outstanding practitioners from our own schools who will share best practices for serving these students well. A special emphasis will be placed on understanding Indiana’s CSEP option, and we will hear directly from schools that have made that transition. We will also offer a “Special Ed 101” track for schools that are just beginning to build programs and are looking for a strong foundation.
And since everyone will be celebrating the end of another school year, we’ll include a special celebratory surprise! I hope you will be able to join us, or send a teacher who could benefit from this opportunity. More information is included in this newsletter.
Wishing everyone a peaceful spring. May God grant you strength for the final leg of the journey.
Warm regards,
James McNeany
INPEA Executive Director

Professional Development That Works Around Teachers' Lives
Indiana's nonpublic school teachers are among the most dedicated educators in the state — and they deserve professional development that respects their time. On-demand PD has emerged as a powerful alternative to traditional in-person training, offering teachers flexibility to learn on their own schedule, the ability to revisit content as many times as needed, and access to high-quality instruction without the cost of travel or lost classroom time.
For smaller schools with limited budgets, it also makes it possible to reach every staff member — not just a handful who can attend an off-site event.
Smekens Education offers two flexible on-demand options built specifically for literacy and writing instruction — both hosted on a newly updated learning platform:
-
webPD — A video subscription library with 200+ PD videos teachers can explore at their own pace, revisit as needed, and use to earn continuing education credit. It's a great fit for individual growth or whole-staff learning during PLC time.
-
webAcademy Workshops — Structured online workshops delivering the same research-based strategies Smekens is known for, in a format that fits busy schedules. All content is rooted in best practices, including the Science of Writing.
Want to Go Deeper This Summer?
For teachers ready to fully invest in their writing instruction, Smekens Education is hosting Ignite to Write this summer in Indianapolis — and virtually. This K-12 conference with 40+ is designed to send teachers home with practical, ready-to-implement strategies they can use right away.
Whether you join in person or online, it's an experience worth making time for.
