With NYSED shaping the financial literacy educational landscape, it is important to note that our state is one of only 14 that does not have a standalone Financial Literacy class as a high school graduation requirement. Whether it is an issue of academic discipline or FTE increase resistance, having Business teachers spearhead this initiative will help our members hang on to their jobs instead of seeing their classes and core topics handed off to other departments.

Please join me in supporting FinEd50 and their effort to encourage NYS to require Financial Literacy as a graduation requirement with a standalone class, not some filtered version occasionally infused into another lesson from another discipline. The research is clear: it is not an effective method of instruction. You can find out more about FinEd50 here: https://fined50.org/

Spring brings us DECA ICDC and the VE Youth Business Summit – good luck to everyone participating in these worthy programs for students!

Conference Recap:

Our Spring Conference included a wall of lessons from our members usable in multiple classes. Please see the pictures included in this newsletter – if you were there, teachers were able to explain how these lessons work in a classroom - straight from the source. Thank you to all of the teachers that made time to share!

  • Financial Management Career Exploration Internships
  • Fashion Marketing College Accounting Budgeting
  • Sports Marketing Computer Literacy Teambuilding
  • Product Marketing Resumes Interviewing
  • Investing Economics Market Research – Taste Tests
  • Paychecks Listening Franchising
  • Branding Intellectual Property

So many of us are approaching retirement that we thought it would be appropriate to invite an expert on our retirement options to speak at the Conference. Peter Knapp and his team from Westchester Financial Partners gave a session on how our NYSTRS pension works, and how to navigate some of the pitfalls and opportunities we face when structuring our retirement plans. Many of the choices are irrevocable, so you need concrete information well before you take the plunge in order to make good decisions. If you want to contact Peter, he has an office in Manhasset and you can email him at

peter.knapp@westchesterfinancialpartners.com

If you were not able to attend the UBS/Islanders Sports Marketing Day Field Trip, it was a great success! Congratulations to Alexandra Milano, daughter of our own Board Member Carolyn Milano, who spearheaded the trip that included meeting with various corporate teams inside the Islander’s franchise and touring the stadium. It was a fantastic event that shed light on the inner workings of the Sports Management field for our students. If you have any other field trips that you would recommend to members, please share with us!

Our thanks to the staff at Teacher’s Federal Credit Union in Hauppauge for hosting us and providing both security and tech support!
