Autism Acceptance Month
April is recognized as Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month—a time not only to increase understanding, but to affirm the dignity, value, and lived experiences of individuals on the autism spectrum.
At the Fairfax County NAACP, we believe that equity must include neurodiversity. True inclusion requires more than awareness—it calls us to create systems and communities where individuals are respected, supported, and empowered to thrive as their full, authentic selves.
For many families, navigating education, healthcare, and support services can present significant challenges, particularly where disparities in access and resources persist. Autism Acceptance Month reminds us of the importance of addressing these gaps and advocating for policies and practices that are inclusive, equitable, and just.
As we continue this work, we remain committed to breaking down barriers and ensuring that every voice is heard and valued. When we embrace different ways of thinking and being, we strengthen our entire community.
This month, and every month, we stand in support of dignity, access, and opportunity for all.

April General Membership Meeting
Seeking Housing Justice: Expanding the Fight for Fair Housing
As we recognize Fair Housing Month, the Fairfax County NAACP is proud to welcome Thomas Fitzpatrick, Executive Director of Housing
Opportunities Made Equal of Virginia (HOME), as our featured speaker for the April General Membership Meeting on Tuesday April 28th, via Zoom.
With a deep commitment to equity and justice, Fitzpatrick works at the intersection of policy, advocacy, and community education to ensure that every person has access to safe and affordable housing. Under his leadership, HOME continues to challenge systemic barriers and expand opportunities for historically underserved communities.
The Urban Institute defines housing justice as “ensuring everyone has affordable housing that promotes health, well-being, and upward mobility by confronting historical and ongoing harms and disparities caused by structural racism and other systems of oppression.”
During this important conversation, Fitzpatrick will discuss how HOME’s anti-discrimination and fair housing work fits within—and strengthens—the broader movement for housing justice.
This Housing Month, we invite you to join us in deepening our understanding and renewing our commitment to ensuring that fair housing is not just a principle, but a lived reality for all.
