President's Message

While this is the April newsletter, I would like to take a moment and look back to the events of the last days in February and the first two weeks of March. The Blizzard of ’26.

It was accurately forecast. We ALL members made our accustomed preparations, as we are veterans of nor’easters.

But this one was different. It presented unprecedented challenges, including large scale tree damage and a nearly complete blackout of Cape Cod, lasting many days. Most of us were cut off from electricity, heat, internet and even mobile phone connectivity.

For many days, leaving the house was challenging, if not impossible. Some of us were trapped in our homes; others needed to be evacuated to shelters or off Cape. Our planning was good, but no match for this terrible storm.

There are many stories of families and neighbors helping the most vulnerable—quite often, that was us. We made it through, using experience, flexibility, toughness and support from many quarters. Now we turn to absorbing the various costs of cleanup and repair.

The impact of the storm was difficult for institutions, as well. As the dominoes kept falling, we slowly realized that we would lose a full week of ALL classes. We asked the College if we could have make-up sessions during their spring break, extending the first half of the semester. There were some courses that already had a cancelled class from the previous storm. The College agreed, and our office manager, Cynthia Jayne, took on the Herculean task of rescheduling classes, working with the college to ensure physical and technical facilities were ready to resume operations. Coordinators communicated with students; committee members worked with one another to reboot the various ALL activities on schedule.

By the third week in March, it was business as usual.

We can take pride personally and institutionally in the way we weathered the storm.

This year, with apologies to Chaucer and T.S. Eliot, I don’t think April will be the cruelest month. That was March. It really did come in like a rampaging lion.

April will be colder than we want it to be because it is, after all, Cape Cod spring. But it will be filled with daffodils and nature beginning again. And more classes. And events. And no blizzards.

For many things, we are grateful.

ALL President

Submit Your Fall 2026 Course Proposal Now

We are seeking exciting new course proposals for the future!

We invite you to submit your course proposal for the fall semester.

The Curriculum Committee is looking forward to your course proposals for Fall 2026. We have started receiving proposals and are busy editing and scheduling courses.

Veteran Coordinators:

Veteran coordinators are invited to submit courses in the ALL portal now.

NEW First-time Coordinators:

If you're interested in offering an ALL course, the first step is to discuss your course ideas with a member of the Curriculum Committee. We can help you formulate your ideas into teaching a six-week or a twelve-week course, in person or on Zoom.

Please contact lifelonglearning@capecod.edu or (774) 330-4400.

The earlier you submit your course, the better for you to receive the time slot you prefer for your class. The deadline is April 17th, 2026.

Henry Tamzarian

Chair, Curriculum Committee

Thank You, Tom Schaefer

Once again we extend our sincere thanks to Tom Schaefer, faculty member and remote education expert at Cape Cod Community College, for presenting another informative Zoom workshop for ALL on March 11th.

Tom generously offered to provide assistance to any coordinators or ALL members interested in following best practices for teaching and learning via Zoom.

Reflections 2026 Launch Event

“Opening a drawer full of linens

my mind travels to different times and places

When entertaining was a leisurely meal

with friends or family”

The Academy for Lifelong Learning has published its annual anthology Reflections 2026. That means the annual Launch Party is right around the corner. A time, as shared in the above piece from the poem “Opening A Drawer,” when ALL enjoys a luscious meal of stories, essays, poems, photographs and artwork created by its members.

Please join the Reflections Team as this year’s contributors share their works on April 22, 2026 from 2-4 p.m. in the atrium of the Lorusso Building on the campus of Cape Cod Community College.

As with any gathering of friends and family, there will be refreshments and home-baked nibbles to enjoy while listening to selected poems and prose created from our members' life experiences, wisdom and joy of living.

Brian Haendiges Publishes

"Corporate Campfire Stories:

A Practical Guide for Aspiring Leaders"

ALL Vice President Brian Haendiges has published a book, Corporate Campfire Stories: A Practical Guide for Aspiring Leaders.

Drawing on lessons learned from years of navigating the corporate world, Brian reveals how to build a more effective, successful and fulfilling career—and to have greater impact.

He explores the hurdles that come with balancing technical expertise with leading people, solving tough problems while finding the direction that's right for you, and inspiring both peers and leaders. You'll discover why the strongest careers are built not just on skills, but on relationships.

Trivia Afternoon a Winner

Our recent Trivia event proved that you don't need to be an expert to have a great time. On March 13th, the Membership and Hospitality teams brought us together for a brand-new event that was less about "knowing it all" and more about "sharing it all."

Under the lively guidance of emcee Lew Taylor, randomly organized teams tackled questions ranging from global geography to music knowledge.

The real prize, however, wasn’t the awards given to the winners—it was the spirit of togetherness and the steady stream of laughter that filled the room. If you missed this event, then we hope to see you at the next! It’s the perfect way to meet new members and enjoy a relaxed, fun-filled afternoon.

Barnstable Comedy Club Event

On Saturday, March 21st, a group of 22 ALL members met at the The Dolphin restaurant in West Barnstable for a delightful dinner before walking over to catch Angel Street (Gaslight) at the Barnstable Comedy Club.

It was a memorable evening of suspense and storytelling. Special thanks go to Aimee Silberman for organizing this fun social event!
