Ali Abidi

Violin student of Francis De la Rosa

Ali Abidi, a sophomore at Onalaska High School, has composed a piece for full orchestra. Celestial Expanse incorporates a full complement of strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion.

In Ali’s own words, Celestial Expanse, originally composed as an abstract, non-programmatic exploratory work, follows the narrative of a vibrant, dramatic, cosmic journey. Initially stranded in the serene sea of space, the main motif sails through majestic, frantic, and melancholic superterrestrial vistas, as if on a search for something greater. Oboe, flute, and cello solos carry the theme, which gradually migrates into fully-orchestrated climaxes in different meters. Through this, Celestial Expanse attempts to offer an infinitesimal perspective into the vastness of the universe.

The premiere performance of Celestial Expanse will be at the OHS Orchestra’s spring concert on Monday, May 4, 2026 at 6:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. The OHS Orchestra is under the direction of Linda Lebakken. Linda is also one of the fine violin instructors at Reed Music Studios!

Below is a photo of Ali rehearsing the orchestra!

The Onalaska High School Winter Drumline competed as part of MPA (Minnesota Percussion Arts): The Minnesota Percussion Association is a nonprofit educational organization that exists to further the development of the marching arts and percussion performance, working with scholastic music programs and independent organizations. The OHS Winter Drumline is one of only a couple Winter Drumlines in the state of Wisconsin. They travelled to MPA competitions in the MSP metro and the MPA Championships in Rochester.  Students from Reed Music Studios "play" an important part in this group: Moe Haskell (tenors) was named "New Member of the Year". Sophia Mayberry (marimba) was named "Outstanding Member of the Year" and has been selected to be the Frontline Section Leader for the upcoming OHS marching season. Other current and past OHS drumline members from Reed Music Studios: Grant Hughes, Krishna Ailiani, Angie Xie, Greta Kleven, Duncan Grover.
