NEW - Opioid Resource Toolkit for Schools

To directly support school administrators, educators, nurses, and mental health professionals in navigating this complex issue, we are proud to launch the Opioid and Fentanyl School Resource Page. This comprehensive online resource provides actionable steps, ready-to-use materials, and critical information tailored specifically for the K-12 environment.

The toolkit offers resources for prevention, intervention, response, recovery, and harm reduction at the state and local level.

We encourage every school district to utilize this toolkit and find new ways to strengthen current emergency operations plans. The fentanyl crisis is a community problem, and schools are a critical part of the solution. By integrating robust education, preparedness, and support systems, we can protect our schools and work toward ending this public health emergency.

Child Sexual Abuse and Assault Prevention Resource Guide

The Office of School Safety has provided multiple resource guides for school personnel over the years. The team is in the process of updating all of our guides, and we are excited to bring you the first revision for 2026!

The Child Sexual Abuse and Assault Prevention Resource Guide is full of helpful laws, definitions, and guidance on how to build a comprehensive program at your school or agency. You will find school-based programs, in-person and virtual opportunities, and programming ranging from free and downloadable to train-the-trainer options. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a perfect time to update your training with this fantastic tool.

Watch future newsletters for the release of other updates.

Update - Student-Staff Summit Data Collection

For the past ten years, the Office has hosted Student-Staff Safety Summits across the state, giving us the opportunity to learn firsthand about the safety concerns of local experts and students. It is an honor to interact with youth in their own communities; these experiences often highlight how safety considerations can shift uniquely from one region to the next.

During the 2025–2026 school year, the Office traveled with Lynn Riemer from ACT on Drugs. Lynn provided middle and high school students with frank, accurate information regarding the consequences of vaping and drug use, including fentanyl. Students found her presentation style to be honest, scientifically grounded, and—at times—downright hilarious. OSS staff followed Lynn's presentation with three workshops on Being an Upstander, Healthy Relationships, and Belonging in Schools.

We have now compiled our survey results for the following communities:

We are grateful for an opportunity to highlight student voices in our work!

Grant Awardee Feedback

Feedback from Monte Vista School District:

"Funds from the School Security Disbursement Grant enabled Monte Vista School District to install exterior security cameras that significantly strengthened campus safety and situational awareness. The cameras expanded monitoring around school entrances, parking lots, and other exterior areas, allowing staff and administrators to better detect suspicious activity, respond more quickly to incidents, and review recorded footage when concerns arise. This improved visibility acts as both a deterrent to potential misconduct and a tool for timely coordination with school resource officers and local law enforcement. Overall, the grant-supported camera system enhanced the district’s ability to protect students, staff, and visitors while creating a safer and more secure school environment."
