April is Language Access Month!
Across the country, communities recognize April as Language Access Month. It is a time to celebrate linguistic diversity, highlight the importance of language access, and connect people to services that help everyone communicate effectively with government agencies. This month, we’re excited to spotlight the City of Long Beach’s Language Access Program, which is dedicated to ensuring residents of all language abilities can equitably access important information and services.
| | Every month, our newsletter will introduce you to the people, programs, and organizations that help advance equity across the City. This month we are featuring a spotlight on our very own Language Access Team! | | |

Language Access Program
| | Image(s) Description: Community members participate in a Technology and Innovation Department Workshop using headsets provided by the Language Access team. On the other end of the headsets is an interpreter that provides interpretation for participants during the workshop in their preferred language. | | In 2013, the Long Beach City Council adopted the Language Access Policy to ensure linguistic access to all City programs, resources, documents and public meetings. At its core, the Language Access Program (LAP) is grounded in the principle that all residents deserve to communicate, be heard, and understood in the languages they use in their daily lives. | | | |
The Language Access Program supports City staff and departments by providing language access to the public in multiple languages. Services include:
- Document Translation, such as flyers, signs, and forms
- Meeting interpretation, such as City Council meetings, community workshops, and events (in-person and virtual)
- Over-the-phone interpretation, which provides instant, on-demand, or scheduled language access via telephone

| Image Description: Flyer reads, "The City of Long Beach wants to hear from YOU! People with disabilities are experts in adaptation, innovation, and advocacy - qualities that move our City forward. The Office of Equity and the Citizens' Advisory Commission on Disabilities are conducting the Disability and Data Community Survey-and we need your input! Learn more and take the survey." | |
Get Counted and Take the Survey now through May 1, 2026! The City of Long Beach, through its Citizens' Advisory Commission on Disabilities (CACoD) and the Office of Equity, has launched the Disability Data & Community Survey. This comprehensive initiative, supported by a one-time allocation of $60,000 as part of the City’s Adopted Fiscal Year 2025 Budget, will focus on bridging critical data gaps and informing policies, programs, and services for the city's disability community, particularly as Long Beach prepares for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Key objectives of the Disability Data & Community Survey, co-created with CACoD and community partners, include:
- Collecting person-centered data through participatory methods, including interviews, focus groups, testimonials, and surveys.
- Identifying existing and emerging needs, barriers, and opportunities for people with disabilities in Long Beach.
- Developing a comprehensive understanding of the community's demographics and geographic distribution.
- Informing City leadership in amending and creating policies, programs, and procedures that ensure full participation and inclusive access.
- People with disabilities, both diagnosed and undiagnosed, who live, work, attend school, or visit Long Beach are encouraged to take the survey.
Feedback will be vital to informing this initiative and shaping a future in which all people can thrive through justice, equity, freedom, dignity, privacy, economic self-sufficiency, and mental and physical health and well-being.
Please click one of the links below to take the survey in your preferred language: English | Español | ខ្មែរ | Tagalog
