Sea Turtles Are Nesting Now!
Sea turtles: green, loggerhead, hawksbill, leatherback, and kemps-ridley are now heading to beaches world-wide. They are digging their two-foot deep nests, and laying clutches of about 100 eggs each. Their eggs will hatch in about two months.
Will the hatchlings be male or female? It depends on the temperature of the nest! Warmer nests produce more female turtles, while cooler temps result in more males being born.
How do you remember that fact? Cozumel Ecological Society member Patrick Crane suggests: "Think hot chicks and cool dudes!"
I took this video on a Cozumel beach at midnight.
A green sea turtle lays about 100 eggs in a nest about 2-feet deep, covers it with sand, and returns to the sea.
It's only a 2-minute video, but the entire process took several hours.
The conservationist in the video uses a red light, a spectum invisible to the turtle.

STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOS
Loggerhead Sea Turtle Makes A Nest
Late one night at the Residencias Reef condos on Cozumel's San Francisco Beach, manager Ariel Casanova photographs a loggerhead sea turtle on the beach as it crawls back to the sea. Is there a nest?
| The disturbed area is marked and protected, and a sea turtle ecologist is called to verify the nest. | The ecologist uncovers an egg, verifying it is a viable nest. The nest is covered. Hopefully the nest will hatch in about two months. | |
How You Can Help Sea Turtles
If you live near a sea turtle nesting area:
Please keep the beach clear of all obstacles, holes, etc.
Most importantly: turn off all lights that shine toward the beach! Lights confuse the hatchlings, which instinctively go toward the brightest light they see, hopefully the moonlit surf. Baby turtles that move inland toward lights will get stranded and die.

Three Very Cool Videos!
The Best of Sint Eustatius Diving: Feb 2026
Stephen Smith, with whom I had the pleasure of diving in Cozumel a while back, sent in this interesting video, with very entertaining music, from his recent dive adventure in Sint Eustatius.
Where in the world is that?
Sint Eustatius is a special municipality of the Netherlands, located in the Caribbean, southeast of the Virgin Islands.
I had never heard of this island, but it sure looks great for diving.
Here is Stephen's story about his video:
"Here ya go - our Feb trip. Definitely not up to Palau standards. Not Cozumel for that matter. But we did get some highlights - a nurse shark, lots of close ups with turtles, and a personal favorite - a stunning encounter with a color-changing, free-swimming octopus. Really special!"
ENJOY Stephen's music video!

A Sea Turtle Rescue in Hawaii
