Delco Youth Voter Initiative: Volunteers and Donations Needed

Up to now, a small group of dedicated volunteers from the League of Women Voters and the NAACP has been working tirelessly to make the First Annual 2026 High School Seniors Voter Registration Project a reality. Now we need our members' help over the next couple of months to bring it on home.
The project is to deliver envelopes with voter registration materials to each graduating senior at Delaware County's 15 public high schools at their graduation rehearsals.
This requires volunteers to stuff up to 5,663 envelopes with the materials and some League members to make brief presentations to the seniors at some of the high schools explaining why registering and voting is so important. So far, we've got 8 of the 15 school districts on board with this project but we hope to get them all by graduation time. You may be able to pick your community or school or do this or work generally for the project.
| We also need donations. We have grant money but it isn't enough to complete the project and we're not sure we'll get more. How well we do this year will dictate whether we can get more grant money and carry this project on in future years. This year, as our voting rights and mail-in voting system are under fierce attack at the federal level, by means of the proposed SAVE America voter suppression bill, we're more determined than ever to convince state legislators to protect and expand our voting rights in Pennsylvania.
One important way the state League - LWVPA - is doing that is organizing Lobby Day, May 6, at the state Capitol Building in Harrisburg. But LWVPA depends on the local Leagues to send members to meet with their own legislators.
LWVCDC will be organizing carpools, getting together talking points and setting up meetings with local legislators.
There will be two Lobby Day trainings, April 11 and April 25. If you intend to go to Harrisburg, attendance at one of these sessions is strongly encouraged but not required.
We’ll be getting the usual hideous LWV T-shirt to wear as we roam the halls hunting for our legislators as well as a voucher for lunch and reimbursement for travel.
We'll be lobbying for voting rights legislation, open primaries and fair legislative districts. Here is the one-page LWVPA handout explaining what we will be advocating, which we will be leaving with the legislators.
Don't be intimidated if you have never attended Lobby Day before. It's fun and our veteran members can handle the talking if you're not sure of what to say.
You can register with LWVPA HERE. If you do, please let Anne Mosakowski or Jodine Mayberry know you have signed up so they can organize the carpools and interviews. Let them know if there are legislators you particularly want to see, but don't worry, they'll handle the details. Last year seven LWVCDC members went. we're hoping for as good a turnout this year.

| So many good governance organizations have become so concerned about the potential for losing our mail-in voting system under the SAVE America Act or court cases that two competing voting rights webinars have been scheduled on the same day, Wednesday April 8, at almost the same time.
It’s up to you which one you, if either, might want to attend.
The ACLU and Common Cause program is titled Notice & Cure in Pennsylvania: New Findings and What They Mean about the most recent court decisions and how to cure faulty mail-in ballots to avoid having them rejected. 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM via Zoom.

Promote the Vote’s program, Myth Busters: Vote By Mail is scheduled for 7 PM to 8 PM. The program aims at providing the facts about the efficacy and security of mail-in voting. The featured presenter is Nicholas Gothard of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, who will discuss the vital work of the Election Protection Hotline 866-OUR-VOTE.

T'is the season for voter information events around the county leading up to the primary election, Tuesday, May 19. LWVCDC has three opportunities in April to register voters, provide them with mail-in applications and answer questions. Always check our website for more. League members love these chances to interact with the public. No special training necessary.

Will Some New Citizens Be Shut Out?
Join the LWVPA and Fair Election Center for a webinar and Q & A on Voting Rights at Risk: Durational Citizenship in Pennsylvania. The webinar is scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, 2026 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM via Zoom.
Unlike most states, Pennsylvania requires citizens to be naturalized for at least one month before voting, meaning anyone who becomes a citizen on or after April 20, 2026 may not be able to participate. Learn what this means, who it impacts, and how it's being challenged.

A webinar titled Unaffiliated Voters & Open Primaries: Trends and the Road Ahead in Pennsylvania is scheduled for Thursday, April 30, 2026 from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM via Zoom.
Presentation by Dr. Lara Putnam, UCIS Research Professor of History and Director of Global Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh and guest speaker Andrew McGinley, Vice President of External Affairs at Committee of 70 will discuss trends in unaffiliated voters, along with an overview of the current state of open primary advocacy in Pennsylvania.

Our 2026 League of Women Voters of Central Delaware County (LWVCDC) Annual Meeting is Wednesday, June 10 from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Haverford Township Free Library, 1601 Darby Road Havertown, PA 19083.
This is a FREE Member ONLY event but registration is required. It is one of only two in-person League events we hold each year so we urge our many new members to come out and meet us and each other.
The purpose of the Annual Meeting is to conduct the important business of our League of Women Voters and to celebrate our mission to Empower Voters and Defend Democracy. There will be much more about League business and the meeting in the May newsletter.

League members nationwide participated in No Kings Day protests against the current administration’s abuses of power.
During the No Kings marches and rallies many participants chanted, “This Is What Democracy Looks Like” and “This Is What Community Looks Like.”
To keep the momentum going the LWV is asking us to get CIVICALLY ENGAGED.

show up! lift your voice - Find an issue that matters to you and advocate for it. Offer public testimony at a government meeting or call and write to your leaders.
grow your network - Encourage family, friends and neighbors to join you in getting civically engaged. There is unity in the community!
amplify + engage - Share your actions on your social media platforms. Craft a call to action to empower others to do so too.
power your partnerships - Join forces with local groups and organizations that share your vision, like your local League. Strong partnerships create real impact!

On April 14 the International Relations Study Group wlll discuss Chapter 2 of 2026 Great Decisions titled The End of an Era: Trump Tariffs in Historical Perspective. (NOTE: This topic was to be discussed in March but due to unforeseen circumstances it is now scheduled for April.)
