Message from President
Carrie Pavis
Hello Beautiful Soroptimist,

I hope this message finds all of you happy and healthy. These have been some trying times.
I hope we can get back to some normalcy soon. When this message reaches you, we will have had our second Zoom board meeting. I know not everyone loves board meetings, but I think all of us are ready to see some familiar faces. With that said, the board and I will be discussing the possibility of having our Wednesday meetings live on Zoom or another similar platform. We are still trying to figure out which one. I know for some this will come with difficulty and others not so much. We have enough women who know technology and will make it as painless as possible.

I’m sure you have received the e-mail from the SIA Board of Directors terminating the 46th Biennial Convention in Bellevue, Washington. I know this is very upsetting to some, but I think it’s the right call considering people from all over the world would be attending. I think even when we get back to normal, normal will look a little different.

I am really hoping we will be able to meet in June and be able to swear in our new President and Board.

President,
Zoom Happy Hour SUDS
When: Thursday, April 30, 2020
Time: 5pm to 6pm
Where: Comfort of your own home

Hosted by:
Sandi Decker & Bonnie Chapman

Governor's Lane's Message
“We are in this together.” That’s a catch phrase that I’ve heard a lot lately on the TV and radio - almost too much!  When I started thinking about it, I asked: how can we be ‘together’ when we are not allowed to ‘get together’? Obviously, I was being too literal…as what this refers to is our commonality of all experiencing the change and isolation in our daily routines. But it also refers to our basic human need to be physically ‘together’, especially those of us that are in an organization like ours that is based on a common goal that we work on with others. We need to be connected! We need to see our friends, and not doing so can lead to anxiety and depression. I heard today that you should concentrate on ‘what YOU can control’. With staying connected in mind, I hope you are still meeting with your clubs in one form or another, whether it’s by conference call, email chains, ZOOM, or other such platforms. Eblast Coordinator Sheryl recently said her club used “jitsi” and said the quality and ease of use was great ( https://meet.jit.si/ ). It’s free too!

Board Meeting:  With that in mind, your Sierra Nevada Region Board of Directors will be having their regularly scheduled board meeting via ZOOM on April 25 at 1 p.m. See the  Call  and  Agenda . As all board meetings are open, you are all invited to join us! As this will be our first board meeting of this type, we are asking that only the board of directors have their cameras and microphones on. The board will need to conduct the business of the region and speak to each other and this would be easier with only the board on the screen. We are asking that if you are to give a report that is on the agenda, that you follow the agenda and be ready to turn on your camera when it’s your turn to present so we can see you. We are looking forward to this meeting! Here is the link to the meeting:  https://zoom.us/j/154154630?pwd=R1BabmlzWFdCejVDNnVNTHBaTnNLdz09   Meeting ID: 154 154 630 Password: 307828. If you want to just call in and listen, please dial +16699009128 then 154154630#,,#,307828#

Electronic Voting:  Thank you to those delegates that have voted for our new board of directors. The ballot will be open until April 20 and we would love to have all clubs participate. Remember, each club gets 3 votes: President and 2 delegates. If your club delegates haven’t gotten the email with the ballot link in it, please contact our Elections Coordinator Jenny Knisley asap at  electioncoord@soroptimistsnr.org . Results of the election will be announced via special eblast on April 25, the same day that in person elections would have taken place at conference.

SIA Communications:  On April 2, headquarters sent out an email with ideas for clubs to use to vote electronically. They also sent out one yesterday regarding Directors and Officers Liability Insurance. I urge you to have discussions with your clubs about both of these subjects. President Tina also sent a very heartfelt email to all members on April 13, with items that the SIA Board of Directors has been working on.

SIA Convention:  We just got notice today that SIA has decided to cancel convention in Bellevue, Washington this summer. All members and clubs should have received the letter from President Tina, but here is a copy for your convenience:  President Tina’s letter  Make sure to cancel you flights and hotel if you were planning on attending. SIA will be processing refunds for individual registration and meals between May 4 and June 1.

Women are vulnerable right now:  As I had communicated many weeks ago, I was privileged to be able to attend the 64 th  Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations in New York March 9-16. At least I thought so; then it was cancelled due to COVID-19. I was so disappointed at the time! But of course, it was the right decision to do so. I did want to share a recent email that I got from UN Women, featuring a tweet from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He is quite the champion for women’s rights worldwide and he says: “Peace is not just the absence of war. Many women under lockdown for #COVID19 face violence where they should be safest: in their own homes. Today I appeal for peace in homes around the world. I urge all governments to put women’s safety first as they respond to the pandemic.” Click  here  to see his passionate message. The need for our mission is not going away, it is needed more now than ever. This is not just happening in third world countries, it’s here at home too. Let’s do what we can now - support your local domestic violence shelter, if you are able. Let’s be ready to help when we can get out there and raise money for women and girls!

It's hard to believe with this Pandemic that we have only 2 more months left of this club year. It definitely will be a year to remember. Seems like we've had more than our share of years to remember.

With that being said, have you been uploading your committee agenda's, minutes, photos, and other documents into our SI Chico Dropbox? It doesn't need to be a Co-chair, it could be a committee member that you delegate for this project.

If you need assistance, please let me know. I have attached a "How to do Dropbox" below.

Since schools are more than likely not returning for the remainder of the school year, it has been decided that we will not be able to proceed with the DIBI project this year.  Other alternatives were considered to try and implement the program, but none would be feasible.

SI Chico is working in coordination with the Bidwell Rancho club to put the goody bags together and give the T shirts to these young ladies.

I would like to thank all volunteers of this program for the dedication that they put toward preparation of the program.

Renee Thatford
DIBI Coordinator
As you may have suspected, The 2020 Home and Garden Show will not be taking place this month as originally planned. Instead, it has been rescheduled to the new dates of July 25 and July 26 . Our obligation and schedule will remain the same, however we will start over with a new sign-up genius. We realize it's difficult to know what our plans will be in July, but please go ahead and sign up and each of us can easily change our chosen shift if needed at a later date.

Thank-you everyone!
