SFPS welcomed U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education Cindy Marten to Ramirez Thomas Elementary School and Capital High School on Thursday, April 20th as part of the department's Raise the Bar: Lead the World tour. Raise the Bar is a"call to action to transform P-12 education and unite around what truly works—based on decades of experience and research—to advance educational equity and excellence."

"We are deeply grateful to Deputy Secretary Marten for providing a spotlight on SFPS' work to transform education. We are firm in our belief that we're creating teaching and learning models that will raise the bar across the educational spectrum," said Superintendent Hilario "Larry" Chavez. "Our success is due to a combination of innovative thinking, driven leaders with a vision for the future, our amazing school board, a collaborative union and federal funding and insight to make it all possible."

While at Ramirez Thomas and Capital, Deputy Secretary Marten saw the three Raise the Bar focus areas in action--Achieve Academic Excellence, Boldly Improve Learning Conditions and Create Pathways for Global Engagement--and learned about SFPS' standards-based learning model and wraparound supports for educators.

At Ramirez Thomas, she visited the SFPS Early Childhood Center (ECC) and teacher Mariah Ortega's fourth-grade classroom to see how the district is accelerating learning. Teacher Bryan Cruz's first-grade bilingual class showed how SFPS approaches multilingualism in elementary school. And the newly installed wellness room and ECC showcased SFPS' commitment to teacher retention and improving working conditions.

At Capital, she visited teacher Marty Carvlin's AP Spanish Language class to experience SFPS' approach to multilingualism in high school, teacher Jennifer Jewell's U.S. History class for a glimpse at how instruction and planning are tied to achieving academic excellence and teacher Barbara Teterycz's Computer and Information Sciences pathway class to see how SFPS is preparing students to secure in-demand jobs.

Deputy Secretary Marten also visited Santa Fe Indian School, where she learned about the school's community-based education model.

For a second year, SFPS is offering innovative, free summer programming across the district in June and July. "We're looking forward to offering a multitude of exciting opportunities for students to stay engaged with their learning and have fun!" said Superintendent Hilario "Larry" Chavez.

Thirty-four programs will be offered at 13 sites, with breakfast and lunch served at most sites. Supporting the programs are pandemic relief funds and funding from the city of Santa Fe.

Last year, SFPS and a cadre of community partners reached nearly a quarter of the district's student population with fun and engaging programs. "Our programs this summer will continue the tradition of being imaginative and opening new avenues to learning. We invite everyone to join in!" said Superintendent Chavez.

Summer offerings this year will range from Math Adventure Camp, to go kart camp, to rock band camp, to a poetry workshop, to credit recovery. Participating community partners include Boys and Girls Club, Reunity Resources, the city of Santa Fe, Hands-on Heritage, Littleglobe, ArtWorks and Guadalupe Credit Union, plus SFPS' talented teachers and principals.

Look for school posts on school social media sites and websites, and attendance goals featured on school marquees. Radio spots will also encourage students to come to school.

"Let's work together to increase attendance in these final weeks of school. Every day counts! Our goal is to finish the year with strong attendance that will carry forward into the next school year," said Superintendent Hilario "Larry" Chavez. "We are so appreciative of the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce for supporting this effort and its commitment to success in school."

At the conclusion of the challenge, each school will be evaluated for average daily attendance growth. The K-6, K-8, middle school and high school with the most growth will be provided with a small reward from the Chamber.

SFPS is celebrating National Volunteer Week from April 16th-22nd! The presidential proclamation for National Volunteer Week calls upon all Americans to observe this week by volunteering in service projects across the country and pledging to make service a part of their daily lives.

The 2nd Annual SFPS Golf Tournament on Saturday, April 15th was a hole in one! Thirty-seven teams participated in the event, which drew nearly 40 sponsors and raised more than $30,000. Funds from the tournament will support essential initiatives like SFPS' back-to-school efforts, family movie nights, professional development efforts, staff appreciations and annual retirement dinner.

"We beat last year's gross by more than $400, all while having fun on a beautiful Santa Fe spring day. This event brings the Santa Fe community together to support so many important parent, family and staff engagement efforts. What could be better than to do so over a game of golf?" said Superintendent Hilario "Larry" Chavez, who is notorious for his gift of golf. "Thank you to everyone who participated in making this such a successful event."

He also thanked Early College Opportunities High School (ECO) for creating beautiful Kokopelli gifts for the golf tournament raffle and SFPS' 21st-Century programs for making custom golf tees for the event.
