TSHH Time Saver & Helpful Hint

This week's Time Saver / Helpful Hint is:
"Holiday weekend valuations and 1040/1041 Allocation"
This past Friday was an exchange holiday so no issues were traded. If a person dies on a weekend, or a holiday weekend, the following IRS regulations are applied for estate and gift tax valuations.

IRS Regulation 20.2031-2(b)1 addresses inversely weighted means. Means are inversely weighted with respect to the number of trading days between the valuation date and pricing dates. Because neither Saturday nor Sunday are trading days, the mean for a weekend Date-of-Death is the straight average between Friday and Monday.

Last week's Time Saver / Helpful Hint topic was:
"Determination of dividends for estate and gift tax "

WebinarMonthly Complimentary Webinar

We instituted a complimentary webinar series to enable our subscribers to receive concise and timely instruction on issues and ideas affecting our industry without having to leave the office.

Next webinar:
"Save time allocating the interest and dividends between the individual and the estate"
is scheduled for Wed, May 1 from 11:30a to 12:00p ET.

Here is a synopsis:

The ESI-APPRAISE 1040-1041 Income Allocator is a powerful tool for the preparation of IRS Form 1040-1041 tax returns when there is a date of death involved. The Allocator calculates and then allocates income, month by month, by CALENDAR or FISCAL year.

TSHH Solution Of The Month

"Cost Basis for Dividend Reinvestment (DRiP) Plans "
When you receive dividends through a DRIP, you then buy the applicable amount of shares based on the total amount of dividends and the stock price that day. These amounts need to be added to your cost basis to accurately reflect the true cost value of the stock owned. You also need to pay attention to whether or not the stock split at all over the time period you owned it. If it did, it would impact the total number of shares owned and the value.
