Mary Magdalene Church is an inclusive church in the Catholic tradition where people from all faiths and backgrounds are welcome to the Lord’s table. We strive to live the values that Jesus taught, to honor and respect each individual and to share the joy of God’s unconditional love in our community and beyond. | |

~A Message from the Social Justice Team~
Greetings!
Most of us know Jackie Robinson as a great ball player. However, when we look at his life, we see a man who was the victim of prejudice and racism as most African Americans were at the time. Yet, throughout his life, he received encouragement and advice from others, and he also encouraged fellow African Americans during his military and baseball careers and retirement.
Robinson was drafted in the Army in 1942 and was later commissioned as a lieutenant with the help of Joe Lewis. In 1944, he refused to move to the back of an Army bus which resulted in his court martial. He was acquitted by a panel that was composed of nine white officers. This experience allowed Jackie Robinson to become someone who stayed strong in the fight against segregation.
After his military service, Robinson joined the Negro League where he caught the attention of Branch Rickey, the manager for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Rickey thought that Robinson was a suitable player to carry over to the Major League Baseball (MLB) due to his athletic gifts and his ability to stand up for himself against racism. In April of 1947, Robinson made his official MLB debut. The color barrier that had not been broken since 1884, was finally shattered. Black athletes who longed for a chance to play in the MLB regained hope that it was a possibility.
It was not smooth sailing for Robinson as some Dodgers teammates resented management's decision to bring a Black man into the clubhouse. Some tried to form an uprising against team management. However, seeing the larger picture, management took Jackie's side. Jackie Robinson made believers out of MLB's highest officials and was changing racial views from the top. Robinson, who took all of the negativity and media attention during his years in the league paved the way for future generations of Black athletes.
In retirement, Jackie Robinson continued to work against the injustices suffered by fellow African Americans. He served on the Board of Freedom National Bank which provided loans to minority members who struggled to secure funding from other institutions. He wrote a column for a newspaper, hosted a radio show and became involved in politics which helped advocate for equal opportunity and dignity for African Americans. Jackie Robinson’s legacy reminds us that what endures is the difference we make in the lives of others.
~Jean Bridges
"A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.”

Instead, please join us in the Sanctuary after Mass for the Spring PCF!
This season’s Parish Community Forum will focus on strengthening our life together as a community. We’ll take time to listen, reflect, and share hopes for our ministries, discuss parish life, and hear from members of our Board - including our Treasurer, Jim Bridges, who will provide an update on our mid‑year budget progress.
This event is in‑person and will also be livestreamed on YouTube and FaceBook for those of joining from home. If you’d like to take part in the sharing of ideas, please join the Facebook stream and use the comments to participate in the conversation.

Young Church Ministry Project
Our Young Church Ministry is working with Spirit NYS, a local organization supporting homeless teenagers with the goal of achieving high school graduation.
Their objective is to fill tote bags which will be given to the teens served by Spirit NYS at the end of this school year. The bags are located by the piano at church. Inside the front pocket of each is an envelope containing a list of items suggested for the bag and a notecard on which can be written a few words of affirmation, encouragement, and support for the teens’ perseverance. We ask that filled bags be returned no later than Sunday, May 10th.
